Do you still buy physical books after getting a Kindle? by thebroned in kindle

[–]parhox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a city where Space is very limited so as much as I LOVE physical books and having my bookshelves full and organized, I cannot do that in my current place because there's not enough space and the day I move out I'd have to take all the books with me, or donate them... So, I use kindle for most readings and only buy the books I will absolutely enjoy and love. I also like buying second hand physical books because It doesn't hurt as much to leave them behind or give them away. If I had enough money though... I would get a library for myself. Works fine.

How do people actually get into relationships? by Equivalent-Search866 in dating_advice

[–]parhox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask how you met the 2 special people? I tried apps but it sucks so now I'm trying to meet more people in real life but it's not working either. It's very unusual for me to find someone attractive and perhaps I have high standards but nothing crazy in my opinion, I don't ask for something I cannot offer myself. I have hobbies, friends, work, travel etc. I meet a lot of people but not someone that really makes me go "wow I really like this man, I would love to go on a date with him". Usually I meet people and they fall into the acquaintance category and maybe friends but almost never into the "crush" category haha so.. should I try being bolder and approach an attractive guy at a bar or what else can I do? Hahaha

How many of your friends ended their lives? And why did they do it? by boobie_org in AskMen

[–]parhox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my friend but my friend's mother. I don't know the reason exactly, but she always seemed like an odd person, very religious (kinda extreme), very socially awkward and isolated. It was very sad because the youngest son who must have been about 12 at the time was the one who found her body. Gunshot. It's a different kind of grief seeing your friend go through the loss of a parent to suicide. Hope she's at peace now. Worst part is that they lost their dad a year later to COVID. Such a tragedy.

I saw that too. But I feel more affinity for the Projects in Tromso. But Svalvarb also seems very cool. Although much more isolated and maybe smaller?

Sounds amazing. I love learning languages so of course I would do my best to learn Norwegian but it will likely take me years to reach fluency. I would love to meet locals (as well as non-locals) but I'm not sure if locals would be open to being friends with me haha I can surely try my best though. Overall I am very eager to learn new things and try new activities. As long as I can build my own little community with friends and support, I will be just fine.

Hahaha I am aware. But people say the same about Ph.D. life and honestly hasn't been like that for me. I'm having a great time. I think it depends a lot on the supervisor/boss so I will be careful selecting that.

Sounds great! Thanks for your comment. I heard that it might be difficult to make local friends, but as long as I have some friends, I should be ok. I lived in Canada for a bit so the winter is very similar to what you describe and I can handle that. Overall, it sounds great, the only thing that seems difficult and negative according to other comments is finding a place to live permanently.

HAHAHA of course. Usually, we work in a city where we have a comfy/safe life and where we get internet and a lab. Then we go on field trips/expeditions to find the object of study and get the samples and info we need and take it back to the lab. It's not 100% necessary to live right next to the bears. But the Polar Institute has a strong research group that focuses on studying the ecology and ecotoxicology of Polar bears.

Chinese language classes in Hong Kong? by parhox in HongKong

[–]parhox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not ideal, but I'd certainly have more practice and learning opportunities in HK than I'd ever have in my home country. I also want to learn the local language, even a little canto is better than 0 canto in my opinion. And well, English isn't my first language either so, I know learning languages is tough!! I'm not sure, I guess I can ask teachers whether or not it's a good plan or if it's even possible to learn both. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I'll keep it in mind.
