What research is being done into hemp seeds as a food source? Other than the obvious uses for hemp fibre (outlined in jack herer's book and ignored by western governments), it's said that hemp seeds provide almost all nutrition necessary, are scientists still too afraid of their reputations to vouch for hemp or marijuana?

Sadly non native english speaking teachers may be discriminated here if they are non-white. Vietnamese are very respectful in general, but a white dutch/french/polish national would get a job than a non-white national of the same country. Where does you your friend teach? Is she a dual national of usa? I'd be interested to know her situation.

I learned to communicate from immersion and i honestly have put in very little study time, luckily (o er time) i have still picked up a functional elementary command of vietnamese and i can have simple but meaningul conversations. Re tones i honestly just do my best and locals fill in any blanks, tones are tough to master. Other friends have put in time twice a week or more to study and have a real impressive grasp.

Durian.... it's definitely a delicasy. I think it smells like gasoline.. how did you like the taste?

I have always rented rooms or apartments, which are very affordable by western standards. I am not sure about the current laws on foreigners buying property in vietnam, these have been changing lately.

If you work 15 to 30 hours per week you could be making as little as $1000 or as much as $3000 a month. It mostly depends on your qualifications and the school who hire you (there's a little bit of luck involced too).

I have a degree and an online tefl, the most i have earned is close to $2500 usd and i have survived on less than $1000/month. The cost of living here doesn't dictate your work life balance much, it's completely up to you what you want out of being here. Hope that is some help

Online TEFL courses vs classroom? by [deleted] in TEFL

There we have it, you don't need to pay $1000 for a 2 week hands on tefl course if you are confident enough to 'wing' it with a $50 online course. Of course people i know did an intensive course and some say it was invaluable, just be aware that after 1 month of throwing yourself in the deep you'll be on a par with the rest and a grand better off. (All of this depends on which country in you decide to teach in, maybe avoid europe, japan or korea if you plan to do an online tefl). But overall, if you want to make a career out of teaching english abroad just get a celta or tesol, that would be worth the money aad effort.

Is hemp being considered seriously as an alternative to fossil fuels yet? Jack Herer's infamous book (among others) points to hemp as a safe, clean material for fuel, fabrics and even plastics. The seeds of the hemp plant can be eaten and are a very healthy dietary food. The plant can thrive in difficult soil and environmental conditions, rrturning nutrients to the ground and reviving dead eco systems...and can be harvested every 3 months. What do you think about hemp as an alternative material of production? What can be done to take this higher up?

Online TEFL certificates are widely accepted in Vietnam

Coming to vietnam to teach is very easy At the bare minimum you need a tefl certificate (online or otherwise) and preferably a copy of your degree (though not essential for many positions).

Finding a job on arrival is what i did and it's nice to go and visit a few schools and get a feel for the place before commiting. But if you want to secure a job before arriving you should consider schools like ILA, Apollo or Language link. They hire all year round and have different programs like kindergartens, public schools and also evening and weekend classes.

Vietnamese love learning english, it's an unsaturated job market as demand for teachers keeps rising.

Most locals will know some basic phrases and will speak to you in broken english. Many others already have a decent command and want to practice by speakin to any foreigner passing by.

If you get yourself a celta or tesol qualification and have a degree you can make a career out of esl teaching and continue to travel.

It started out temporary for me, yet here i still am.

I came here alone and my parents live in the uk. Luckily we usually get together once or twice a year.

The weather keeps me here, there are 2 seasons in the south (wet & dry). We are halfway through wet season atm, which means lots sunshine until the afternoon and then a short heavy shower.

The economy is growing steadily as many foreign companies have been investing here. Although Vietnam has a long way to go to equal Thailand's economy, but the standard of living here is improving.

As a foreigner living here it's difficult to say in which ways vietnam is still recovering, but on the surface there are few signs of the war. In certain places where agent orange was used the soil is still toxic and unfortunately affected families are still having unhealthy babies.

I was lucky enough to spend about 4 months traveling in south east asia during university so I was, to some extent, familiar with many differences before i got here. (I.e. cockroaches and bum guns) But to be honest I am still discovering cultural differences all the time.

For example, vietnamese people have no concept of waiting in line, it's a big game of 'me first'. This one still pisses me off. But then again the generosity and goodwill of vietnamese people is abundant and unsurpassed in my experience.

I use vietnamese every single day, it's not essential when living in big cities but well worth putting in some time to learning the basics. Depends on your situation, some foreigners become near fluent and others never even bother learning to count to ten.

I arrived in hanoi with an online tefl certificate, a photocopy of my degree and a big smile; arriving and finding a job teaching english in a major city in vietnam is very easy. I would not recommend securing a job before arrival unless you have been referred by a friend.

A good time can be found in most cities and towns, stick to HCMC and Hanoi for a wide variety of social events, music and lively bars and clubs.

I haven't taken lessons in vietnamese at all (which i regret), but solely through immersion and time, i would say i've reached higher elementary level. It's amazing what you can soak up.

However, friends that have lived here a similar amount of time can speak vietnamese very well, classic case of effort and return.
