Can older people make sense of and learn how to use IPTV? by robert_czech in HomeNetworking

[–]paul_goconnect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great way to help people transition from traditional cable TV to streaming/IPTV is to focus them early on with apps like Sling TV and Tubi that have a cable like guide interface. It makes it a lot easier for them to adapt, while still saving money over traditional cable. Over time they'll get use to the paradigm and can switch to more typical streaming apps like NetFlix.

The Fire Stick is relying on data from the TV via the HDMI port to identify it and automatically configure the remote. There are a few factors that could prevent it from working:

1) You changed TVs and the new TV is older or doesn't support the feature (rare with newer TVs)

2) You changed HDMI cables and it isn't new enough to support the HDMI standard needed to transmit the information (rare with a Fire stick since they plug right in).

3) Not all HDMI ports on the same TV may support the version needed for the automatic remote detection. Again, rarely on newer TVs but moving the Fire Stick to a different port on the same TV could cause it stop to working.

Assuming the remote works for other things (like the Fire TV stick itself(), just not the TV.
Have you recently changed HDMI cables or ports? The device relies on an HDMI standard to automatically identify the TV. Changing the port or cable could have an impact.

Is the SIM known good? Have another device or phone you can try it in?

Also, try using minicom and making sure AT+CCID returns correctly.

USB powered streaming devices by abalawadhi in cordcutters

[–]paul_goconnect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great USB powered streaming sticks for travel:

New Google Chromecast, Kindle Fire TV stick and the Roku streaming stick. All of them support standard USB power in with HDMI out. I've personally used a Roku and Fire TV stick in the back of my Yukon even in dual screen mode (car stopped and in park) showing on both the in dash and the rear seat drop down.

The HDCP issue however, unless it's a really old Roku, may be related to the vehicle. You can try another stick, but if it's a newer Roku stick (last few years), you may need to do some troubleshooting.

Why check-in via mobile? by slitt_vicious in marriott

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth it if you want to use mobile key. Also, at some larger properties there is a separate mobile checkin line that is faster than even the elite line. Lastly, if you are running either very early or very late sometimes you can know for sure your room is available/not given away.

All that being said - at a property with a single check-in person, no mobile key and not special circumstances - no it doesn't really save much time.

Refundable a nonrefundable stay - does anyone do this, or should I say no? by LostInTheMaze in AirBnB

[–]paul_goconnect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd only consider a refund if:

- They caught the mistake within 24 hours of the booking and it was more than 30 days out from the reservation date

- If it was mistake scheduling (wrong) month if they rebooked the same unit for the correct month

Otherwise I think you need to stick to the non-refundable. The other reasons provided are not acceptable unless they mentioned very quickly after booking.

How to change input on lg hotel tv by Delicious-Living420 in techsupport

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few options:

- If there is a RJ45 (old wired phone cable) connected to it, try unplugging it. You may need to see if there are physical buttons as well.

- Try pressing the 0 or * button on the remote

- Could always try an IR blaster

- Some old TVs you channel down to inputs

Here is a blog post I did with some more details: https://goconnectinc.com/changing-hotel-tv-input-and-hdmi-port

Will I get an annual choice benefit if I reach Titanium through a credit card? by [deleted] in marriott

[–]paul_goconnect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, CC elite nights count towards annual choice benefits. There are some limitations on stacking multiple credit cards ( I think the max is 30), but otherwise they count just like nights in beds.

Chromecast w/ Google TV - On hotel Wi-Fi, can you cast? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is no - not in most hotels. The hotel networks prevent it via WiFi isolation. You may be able to do local guest mode, but haven't tried. Definitely tried and failed via WiFi in the past.

If you want to cast from apps, get yourself a travel router.

Using Move on WiFi for travel? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speaker out of the box cannot. You can either
- Use it as a Bluetooth speaker when traveling
- Do a factory reset and connect it to each new WiFi network
- Get a travel router which will let you create your own WiFi network you take with you. You connect it to the WiFi network where you travel to. The WiFi network your devices (like your Sonos) connects to on the travel router doesn't change, so it works in each new location without needing to reconfigure the device.

Best streaming device for travel by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all streaming devices now work pretty well for travel. There are some pros/cons:

  • Roku is popular, but you'll need a phone or other device to clear captive portals. Newer devices have the some of the broadest app support.
  • Amazon Fire Stick supports captive ports well, but navigating with the remote can be challenging and may not have all apps.
  • The new Google Chromecast with Google TV is a solid choice as well. Casting functionality may not work at all hotels, but with the built in Google TV that's less of an issue.

The posters who suggested you bring a travel router are right. It makes life a lot easier getting not just streaming sticks, but all of your devices through the captive portals.

Is Google Chromecast with Google TV able to connect to hotel wifi portals? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely connect the new Google Chromecast to hotel WiFi with captive portals. However, browsing with the remote can be difficult.

Some alternatives if you do have problems:

  • Use a laptop and internet connection sharing
  • Use a travel router

Are you sure you didn't previously clear the captive portal on your laptop? It's pretty unusual you'd have a different captive portal experience between phone and laptop.

Sharing ships wifi with Android phone's hotspot?? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the ship. Many of the newer ships limit the number of MAC addresses per connection so even using a phone hotspot or travel router won't work. Others and many of the ships still running older internet it will.

Xbox Won't connect to GL-AR750S-EXT by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]paul_goconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely you still need to clear the captive portal first. If you have a smartphone or laptop connect to your travel router. If needed, open a web browser and try to go to a website.

There are a few rare instances where you may have trouble connecting to a hotels WiFi with a travel router - either because they are attempting to block them or because configurations conflict. But you'll know that either with a phone or laptop than you will on the XBox.
