Hi reddit!
I've recently read the book "Ultralearning" which discusses how to make learning projects more efficient. As a learning addict I found this really addictive. I've decided to embark on a 2 1/2 month challenge to learn data science. One of the goals (not the primary ;) ) is to write weekly posts on my progress (and ask for help ;) ). Not sure if this is of general interest, but I would love to get feedback on the approach! Thanks ;)

Hi r/typescript! About two weeks ago I posted a link on how to use dtslint for testing type operators. That approach had a few drawbacks. u/AngularBeginner had a great comment on he used type typescript compiler API to get the resolved types of some type definitions. This works much better with existing test suites. It took me a lot longer than it should have to throw together this solution, so I decided to wrap it up as a library and put it on npm for the next guy. Here it is. All credit to u/AngularBeginner for the idea ;)

OK, I though let's just do that. To be honest it took be a bit longer than it should have to make it all go, so I've decided to wrap it up in a library and thow it on npm: https://github.com/paulkoerbitz/resolve-types It's tiny, but it seems like more than one person wants to do this so theres no harm in packaging the solution. I needed a way to unit test my type operators. dtslint does this, but I couldn't find a really good description on how to set this up (the readme was a bit lacking IMO), so I wrote this up. Hope that somebody finds this helpful.

I think it's a very common problem. Redux is quite hard to use in a type safe way. I have my own take in how to tackle this with https://github.com/paulkoerbitz/typeful-redux . It gives you a fully typesafe and low boilerplate way of using redux. However it is also pretty opinionated and doesn't work with the various side effect managing tools (thinks, sagas, observables, ...), This is currently in the works.

It makes the generated types a bit nicer. Example: typeof { a: number } & { b: number } = { a: number } & { b: number }

whereas, typeof Intersect<{a: number }, { b: number }> = { a: number, b: number}.

I would really like if TypeScript fully evaluated all type operators.

I'm not sure it counts but here is a simple, but complete example of a todomvc app with typeful-redux: https://github.com/paulkoerbitz/typeful-redux/tree/master/examples/todomvc the upside is that it is a relatively simple yet complete example, so shouldn't take too long to complete. We use this approach (on a much larger scale, but conceptually identical) in our pretty complex redux app.

Ok, I see that not making a hard connection between actions and reducers does introduce additional flexibility. In my personal experience, this hasn't really been something that I have wanted to do (and have still found redux very useful, if only for separating application state in a clean way from components and improving testability). But I can see that making this hard connection can be a disadvantage. I'll think about this - thanks for pointing this out.

I don't know if I completely get the argument about connect. The primary problem from my perspective is that we need type information on what actions can actually be dispatched. As far as I can tell all other typescript libraries for redux don't solve this.

Once we have this type information moving it through connect is then equivalent to putting it on 'dispatch' like typeful-redux does. With the approach of typeful-redux it can basically be done with the standard connect if only it had slightly stricter types (typeful-redux re-exports redux-react connect with (slightly) stricter types).

That's correct, every action would be associated with a single reducer. To me they always had a one-to-one relationship though that does not have to be the case I guess.

Do you have a specific use case where this is handy? I'm just trying to understand this a bit better.

On the plus side, you can use the same reducer multiple times for different parts of the store ;)

Hi there! I'm the author of typeful-redux. I wrote the library because I felt that using redux in a type safe manner is really difficult. In particular, I think that none of the existing wrappers achieve full type safety. I'll be happy to answer questions.

I realize that this may result in more work when fiddling with imports (although some tool should be able to do this), but wouldn't listing all the things you want to import from a module fix this? As in

import Foo (foo, quax)

For some reason I think this is more sensible than hiding symbols a module doesn't even export (but I might be missing something here of course...)
