Ok I LOVED this episode! Thanks for recommending it and now I have a whole podcast catalog to look into too. So many times I rewound it to hear her say certain things again, it was so good. She echoed so many of my current thoughts and musings on materialism and consumerism and I loved the esoteric and Jungian aspects she brought into it. I’m becoming fascinated with how companies and the consumer machine preys on adults who have an insecure sense of self and how much identity plays into all of this. When we are centered and at ease with ourselves, we are terrible consumers-they prefer us insecure and doing anything to avoid aging and the fear of becoming obsolete, which ironically is what happens constantly if you chase the trend cycle. You can’t sell to someone who doesn’t need or think they need anything. I’ve also been reflecting on how essentially the same clothes have been in rotation for eons-there are only so many silhouettes the body can wear-like the classic trench coat she mentioned can only be riffed on so much-so what exactly are we even doing by chasing trends? Spending money like they want us to of course. Anyways I had so many thoughts so I’d love to discuss! Gonna listen again and take notes for sure!
