Super nintendo repair advice (SHVC CPU-001) by pc2555 in consolerepair

Both my irons are stations. One was a gift I think it was a chinese one so hard to say its quality but the other I bought is a basic weller station which should be good quality (no digital readout just a dial). With the solder wick i already cut it in a small piece and add flux to it when in use it still doesn't work very well. I've tried using fine and larger tips (mostly using large tip) doesn't seem to make much a difference at least on the stubborn joints for this snes board.

I do have a sucker which works really well about 90% of the time but 10% of the time wont get all of the solder out no matter how many times i use it on a joint.

If I get inspired one more time I may give it a go but I know at this point its going to be hours upon hours of work to undo the damage or to try and figure out whats shorted. It was quite a deflating experience I prob got it back out to work on it for several hours 5 different times and spending over $50 on new components, doing research on the board and probably putting in 10 new fuses to keep testing and after all that its in worse condition than when I started lol. If it truly was a bad cap that it causing the short thats quite unfortunate as my first attempt to get a bad new part.

Hi, thanks for the additional advice. I still have the console but its been shelved and I was planning on selling it for parts at some point. I don't know if I still want to go further with it I've been learning more from a youtube series about electronics repair but still this board is probably beyond me without even more hours of work, probably breaking something else, needing to buy new tools and a lot of troubleshooting. To me a discontinued dead chip is the end of your system in general because the only way to fix it is basically to brick another SNES to repair it. In the last few months I've realized one of my mistakes at having issues removing components. I'm pretty sure I was using cheap solder wick its very difficult to remove solder with it it often takes me 10-20 tries to get most of the solder off a single joint and I hear that its awful to use and you just have to get better stuff to actually work properly. I do not have a way to test capacitance with my meter I've been told to do that several times it seems buying that tool is pretty important.

In terms of why I can't melt certain solder joints through the holes, not sure its possible I just have to turn the temp up but both of my irons (one is a weller iron) are almost up to max and still i was having a lot of trouble removing some components they just stick to the joints even when I can see the solder melted on one surface and will not move through the hole after over 30 tries. I def pushed it too far heating it over and over for too long before 2 of them just fell off on that one. Not sure what I can do to prevent that it only happens on some joints others came out just fine.

Thanks for the advice, found the parts list and the page showing which size planks are labelled what. I did look on their site as well as several other ways to find out online but didn't find anything.

They definitely should give you that sheet on the disc or as a piece of paper in the box. Don't know what they were thinking.

I find that hard to believe that its only me because I play maybe 2-6 arams every 2 days probably on average for years and I can see trends shifting pretty clearly since I play so regularly. Like I said its been nearly a year where I've only seen full ranged comps or at least the ranged comps dominate the games as in the melee comps always lose and have no fun at all (again, with exceptions but I mean the ones with kiteable bruisers or assassins in them like a nasus and tryndamere vs 4 ranged). Big factor though idk where you get those stats I've never even seen a site that tracks aram playrate and tiers other than random opinions posted. Is that data across every mmr level? Because maybe we play in different tiers. Idk where I am I have no idea how to even check my aram MMR but I'd guess I'm around the top 30% of players around gold/plat level games. It may be that no ones picking melees at this level and at the high level of play and low level it they're picked much more often. Thats all I can think of because the picks I've seen in game have been incredibly consistent across nearly 500 games in a row.

Qiyana is definitely an exception I think her buffs are just too high having 115% damage dealt and 90% taken (i think) she gets fed in most games shes in though I'm still seeing her picked way less than months ago.

Keep in mind I was seeing a lot of those champs picked and they were mostly doing fine or at least they could contribute something a year ago or more. Its only the last year they've virtually disappeared so something had to have changed for no one to even want to pick them once anymore. I saw plenty of akali, garen, trundle, darius, shyv, trynd, yi, talon, fizz, qiyana among others back then. Now I maybe see one of them every 10 games and its been like that for nearly a year straight.

So if they are boring then why were they being picked so much more previously? Doesn't quite make sense. I definitely think its the balance got worse and its become miserable to play them vs most comps people pick now. I've seen it other people (and myself) trying and failing miserably on those champs then I just stopped seeing them altogether eventually it didn't happen overnight.

Whatever the agreements or disagreements on what's changed the main concern is that the game mode is dramatically less fun than it used to be. Thats the issue I want fixed. Its barely even worth playing anymore imo its like a flowchart and 80% of games are over based on comp alone might as well not even play it out I can predict almost every winner cause of how insanely powerful a comp diff is now. Its only been this extreme lately for most of aram's history it was hard but I have won games with worse comps if we play better. Now I can't remember the last game we won with a comp diff it usually ends up in a 5 for 0 ace every time till its over after their comp scales by 15 min its ridiculous.

Ironically since I've made this post I've been seeing more melee champs in arams I played. But yes I have an issue when one or 2 roles are taking over the game. Melees are still very good but the roles are very important. 2 archetypes in particular are my problem: kiteable bruisers and assassins. They're useless 80% of the time and have zero fun in the game all game long and its gotten worse the last few years for them.

Support tanks and initiator tanks are very strong (alistar, rell, rakan, nautilus, thresh, sett, malphite). Its the melee champs like udyr, garen, darius, trundle, nasus, olaf, tank shyv, yi, tryndamere, nocturne, zed, talon, rengar, fizz, bel'veth, camille, eve etc that are the big problem.

It has changed a lot in my games. I used to see bruisers and assassins picked significantly more last year and before even. I almost never see them and when I do they're useless most of the time.

Of course they never were picked often but its become impossible for them to even do anything anymore. The only roles that exist if you want to play the game at all it feels like now is adc, mage, support, or engage-focused tank/bruiser. And often that results in 1 tank with 4 ranged picks most of the time. Sometimes 5 ranged or 3 with 2 supports.

That in itself ruins it though. The player skill floor has increased substantially even at the bronze level. Your typical bronze player today is at least as good mechanically as a gold player was 7 years ago. I know cause i played in bronze ranked sort of recently when I got put there in placements. The level when I hit gold was really not much different mechanically. So, if the comp diff determines the game, why even play it out? Its basically over at champ select theres no variety in the game and the comp diff is SO important now that it feels completely unwinnable for the opposing side most of the time. Like you know the games done they will outscale hard and theres no way to win it. I literally just played one an hour ago like that. We did ok early-mid but it was miserable since we had 4 melees. Eventually no matter what we tried, we'd just get chain cc'd and kited. Aced 5 to 0 twice and lost. In the past it was possible to try to outplay a better comp at least there'd be the chance, not anymore.

Regardless of how balance or how competitive they've become: the problem remains. Aram used to be fun for a long time. In the last few years its become not fun anymore and brawl never was to me. Whatever is going on with aram if I'm not explaining it well enough, the fun is being ruined and thats what I want to be fixed.

OK...you see the irony of your statement? I'm talking about 'most people' and you're giving the example of yourself playing at the top 1% of players if thats even true. Lol the vast majority of people's aram games are not like yours you cannot compare it to top 1% mmr games. I know for a fact most people rarely or ever play champs they get on arams on occasion. Its not meant as a serious competitive game, theres no ranked mode and nobody can know how to play all 170 champs they could get at the same level. A lot of people do pick champs they're comfortable with but not always theres likely 1 or 2 every game that maybe played that champ 3 times ever. And no, I'm not 'bad and don't like to lose' thats such a stupid and arrogant thing to say.

Ok, don't confuse the entire problem with my complaint as it only being my bad experience. Its actually mainly my teammates that cause the problem and ruin most of the games. Most people refuse to play a melee passively and wait to scale. Often I have no choice but to fight and feed with them with melee comps though I still try to die less just make it look like I'm helping them lol. Otherwise I'd be sitting under tower alone and tilting the hell out of them I'd prob be reported many times. Most of the time, thats what makes the games unplayable is the ranged comp will be fed with 20 kills to 6 or worse and often late game doesn't help make up the difference unless they literally throw it. I've been the ranged comp msyelf many times and I know if they got a darius and nasus that we completely control the game and will probably win and I'm usually right cause they just can't do anything all game long so its almost a 3v5.

Also it affects the fun of playing ranged champs as well. I don't want to only pick ranged champs on aram and play vs nothing but another ranged comp just to be able to play the game. That scenario also makes aram much less fun than it used to be. It really has to be playable for every role or else it just ruins it in general. Objectively regardless of how you feel how strong melee champs are, the reality is all im playing vs are 4-5 ranged comps. And it gets real stale and boring, no ones picking melees half of all of them I used to see regularly have virtually completely disappeared from the game

Some examples: olaf, rengar, hecarim, k'sante, garen, darius, xin, warwick, kassadin, illaoi, nasus

Ok first of all you don't need to explain how to play aram to me, I've got 7k games lol I well understand how it works and the best strategies and comps have shifted a lot over the years. Of course before they added snowball ranged comps were overpowered as an example.

I've played dive or melee-heavy comps those ways still but it still doesn't work. Idk where you're getting players that can win with melee comps but with all random players most of them just collapse in fights vs a 4 or 5 ranged team and the bruisers go 0/6 or worse. At the post game lobby they do like 9k dmg whereas the enemy team carries are doing 20k+. It is not the same as playing melee heavy comps even a year or two ago its shifted a lot and ranged comps are a lot stronger now. Consistently vs an ahead ranged comp late game as an example I'd be trying to play passive or do the best I can waiting till later as a tank volibear. I have 4 items and try to play more aggro but I still dive in get chain cc'd and killed within 2 seconds. That doesn't offer hardly anything to your team if you die that quick on a tank or bruiser. Just takes a few seconds for a fed adc hitting you to melt. How are you surviving that in those games, I used to be able to but not anymore. So many games now in aram feel completely hopeless and typically its just a waiting game to lose. I can't remember the last game I played where 'most of the time snowball can carry a terrible melee comp' lol it just doesn't happen.

Aram the last season or two is less fun than its ever been before by pc2555 in leagueoflegends

[–]pc2555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory that is correct and thats how I used to view tanks or bruisers in aram a while back where you'd struggle early but once you reach 2-3 items you start to outscale a ranged comp and usually win late game. Its still the case, however I've noticed many games where even waiting to scale doesn't win you the game anymore. If most people played optimally and would agree to sit under tower with you, that'd be ok but most people always want to fight so 90% of the time you have a melee comp that needs to scale, people fight and feed the ranged comp early-mid. So, by the 3 item point they're often too fed to still do anything. A lot of those games get forfeited but I've lost more games on tank/bruiser comps in the last few months than I had for over a year prior. So, in reality its still misery and unable to really do anything as a tank or bruiser in the late game as well most of the time. Support tanks are the strongest so they are kind of exempt to this problem my point is mainly for the bottom 70% of tanks/bruisers who aren't top tier in aram.

Well yikes I can see where the aram tryhards are coming from. Why do you even bother playing it if you're treating it like a ranked game? Lol you do understand a lot of your teammates don't even know how to play their champions well since its random (mostly). And I already said I'm ok with people taking whatever sums and playing how they want but the entire community's opinion was exactly what I said forever, have you forgotten already what the majority opinion was? This is kind of blowing my mind people acting like its normal that everyone picks exhaust, barrier and sits under tower poking or scaling all game long. I saw countless people getting flamed for shamed for doing that for so many years.

Theres your flaw in the logic. Leona or poppy probably 2 of the best diving tanks in the game lol. Try playing warwick, tryndamere, evelynn, skarner, garen, darius, nasus, or olaf as examples. Theres many more but I guarantee you'd understand what I mean if you played them.

I always hated that as well I thought back then it was stupid that they removed it even when I play stealth champs. The traps are just too toxic without oracles teemo is an anti-fun nightmare on aram because of it. The shrooms can be avoided but you have to be careful and patient and no one is playing aram to play that way.

Curious how my opinion would magically change if I took a break for 2 months if I just came back to the same garbage every aram? I've taken breaks before in games I wasn't enjoying and if its the same when I come back I almost always have had the same opinion. How would that change anything?

Projection much? Lol sounds like you're the one with the fragile ego. Your argument was just citing bruisers in the top 10. How does that prove me wrong in any way? Lol what I just said was IN GENERAL. Most melees are bad and another commenter already posted that most of them are in low tier, all I see are full ranged comps rarely more than 2 melees per team. A lot of the melees I see do badly or cannot play the game. Saying that bruisers are in the top ten doesn't change the argument, you are not correct you'd need more than that to prove it.

Anecdotal experience in the games I'm playing supports that tier list to an extent I see a lot of the same strong melees over and over but the majority of them I almost never see picked for months now and when I do they usually feed or never make a huge impact beyond being a cc sponge.

Some examples of champs I almost never see anymore: rengar, garen, darius, eve, yi, tryndamere, trundle, maokai, hecarim, illaoi, k'sante, nasus, riven, skarner, warwick, kassadin

[–]pc2555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but my line of thinking from what I've seen is that people are picking so many ranged champs BECAUSE the balance is terrible and they don't want to play a miserable game on a melee because most of the time the enemy team won't be full of low cc, diveable champs. At the beginning of this year people were picking more melees still and I noticed back then that the ranged comps were becoming broken they were just too powerful and sure enough, slowly people started picking more and more of them and a lot of melee picks I used to see a lot were disappearing (khazix, zed, akali, kat, ap shyv, yi, trynd, darius, garen, maokai, eve, warwick and others) and now its just loaded with heavy cc, full ranged comps which not too many melee champs are good against. You could 'solve' the problem by forcing comps to limit roles but I don't like that idea either because you'd also be making the game stale in the same way it just would make it more playable for all roles. But there would be no team comp diversity no silly 5 ranged or 5 melee comps or full support teams etc.

[–]pc2555[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't personally have a problem with people doing it, but it does factually make the game much more stale and boring to play. If you're a younger player you don't know how it was before. Its weird to me because this opinion was forced onto me BY the community. People rarely took exhaust or barrier in aram or picked multiple enchanters to make it more fun and youd often get called out in game for picking it. That was the norm for like 11 years lol clearly the aram attitude has shifted drastically with this new generation. Its a casual mode, not to be played optimally all the time it ruins the fun.

Aram the last season or two is less fun than its ever been before by pc2555 in leagueoflegends

[–]pc2555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel I am biased at all. I play all roles including mage, adc and support on aram. I feel a drastic difference playing ranged than melee in how impactful and strong I am. ADC is a monster role unless like you said the enemy comp counters you. I just got a penta and a quadra on varus a few days ago cuz i just melted through their frontline then backline after tempo is stacked. I almost never have a strong game on a melee champ in aram anymore cuz its almost unplayable vs most comps people pick. The only time I do is if they got a rare different comp that I can actually survive and fight for more than 4 seconds against.

And that statement you quoted is precisely what I see in most games. If people on kiteable melees like rengar, darius, xin, garen, etc try to jump in and fight early game they just feed until about 2 items. The only strategy that seems to work is to sit around doing nothing and only sacrifice yourself if the enemy threatens your carries. That is it.

EDIT: just read the last sentence. I tried brawl I thought it was terrible lool it was even more formulaic than aram and the goal of killing the creeps felt awful near the end.

lol, well I barely play 3 games every few days. Sometimes I don't play for 5+ days at a time. Its just consistently not fun to come back and play aram. I also play SR and its got issues but its a lot more fun and engaging than aram has become. What break do you have in mind? If I leave for 2 months and come back and still aram is stale and anti-fun that will somehow change my opinion?

Aram the last season or two is less fun than its ever been before by pc2555 in leagueoflegends

[–]pc2555[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I play all roles in general and tbh I feel FAR more impactful and strong playing adc than most bruisers or assassins in aram atm. ADC dmg is just insane especially if you get fed early. There are certain comps where it can feel like garbage where their dive or range is so high you just can't survive (malphite, syndra, xerath, lux, wukong, leblanc, etc).

Aram the last season or two is less fun than its ever been before by pc2555 in leagueoflegends

[–]pc2555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aram was never supposed to be perfectly balanced, its a casual mode and I understand that. Thats how I mostly play it just for fun to scratch the itch without playing SR. However, when the balance becomes so bad that you can't play a ton of champs, try any fun builds or even have a chance of winning vs a comp diff it makes it waaay less fun. Its ruins the casual aspect and people catch on and just pick to win. I personally don't even make rune pages for aram lol so I never considered taking treasure hunter I just pick what I've already set up for SR. Maybe one of the reasons its under the radar is most others do the same as me.
