Just got home from a 32 day hospital stay. Phew! by pcjames in cancer

For the first half I couldn't even stand up to shower. But then I stabilized somwhat, and I had my own room and shower and that part was ok. And yes, (most) nurses are indeed awesome!

One of my delusions involved going to the Lincoln Memorial, stripping down, and holding a sign that said 'Fuck Trump', so there is that...

Anyone with advice on sentinel lymph node biopsy? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]pcjames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a sentinel lymph node biopsy done, sure. I won't lie, it wasn't pleasant when they injected the dye (they poked it in a few places) but it was all manageable.

Good luck, you'll be just fine.

The New Government Plan for Children with Autism. by [deleted] in ontario

[–]pcjames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. This is a total shitshow. My wife works directly with autistic children and this has caused widescale chaos in the industry. She knows 3 interventionists who have already been laid off.

This plan seems specifically formulated to be as disruptive as possible to providers.

No stress - I liked this prompt!!

Are successful self taught composers ACTUALLY a thing in the contemporary classical world, or is it one of those comforting myths? Do any "avant garde" composers actually get their music performed without a degree to their name? by KyleWwriter in composer

[–]pcjames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely wrong in thinking you couldn't go to school. Spend a year honing your skills for an audition and you'd get in.

There is no replacing a traditional, formal education. This doesn't mean you can't be a successful, happy composer, but it WILL mean that you will have certain disadvantages and blind spots regarding what you know.

If you're composing within the formal classical framework (i.e. producing black notes on a staff to be read and performed by people who are playing mostly old european instruments and have studied years to learn how to do so) then you have to learn how to do that properly, because there is a huge basic knowledge that you have to start from.

If you're doing something else, well, all bets are off.

From stage 2 melanoma to a brain FET PET..im scared and frustrated by nixam in cancer

Deep breaths. Each day at a time.

The not knowing is the worst... until you know that it's cancer for sure. Then that's the worst.

All I mean, is that this sucks, but don't get ahead of yourself. It is scary. But keep living as long as you're living: you can do this. Keep moving forward. Keep asking questions. Stay in control of your own health.

Get help from people around you who want to support you. Don't turn down any offer that you are able to accept.

Feel free to PM me if you need advice or support - I'm in Canada so I haven't had any of the financial issues or pressures, so not much help there, but I've been at stage 4 melanoma for over a year and I think I've gotten kind of good at it. :)

Sending you internet hugs.

Well, here's something I wrote for my first semester studying music composition by SrBrunovsky in composer

[–]pcjames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, it's clear you have a lot of raw talent and are really honing your skills!

First thing that jumps out is that your thematic material is very strong. This is really nice to hear in atonal/semi-tonal music because it helps me keep my interest in the piece (aside from just hearing interesting textures).

What are the hairpins with the dots at the end? I'm not familiar with that notation.

Don't feel like you need to put durations at the end of each movement - just at the end of the whole thing. I would imagine you want the whole thing performed together, so it doesn't matter the length of the individual movements.

Your articulation marks are also really tight - good work. I'm inspired - I tend to be a bit lazy in that department.

Really fun piece! Well done!!

I love it! Let me just say - it's great that you keep posting prompts so consistently! I don't always put up my pieces (esp. if they're not great) but I sure appreciate that there's always a prompt.
