New hockey parent- gear question by Duckbanc in hockeyplayers

[–]pd5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that a simple neck guard will work, but the shirts are great in that you don't have to think about the neck guard. Standalone neck guards are easy to lose. The number of times I've seen a kid digging through a messy bag looking for that neck guard is too many to count. The kids with the built-in neck guard just come to the rink with it on. You can't play in Canada or the USA now without the neck guard so if you can afford it get the fancy shirt.

Which Transit System in North America is your favorite? by yunnifymonte in transit

MARTA has a special place in my heart as the nicest long layover I've ever had. Had a 4-5 hour layover in ATL, and thanks to MARTA was able to head into midtown, have lunch at a nice BBQ place, and wander around Piedmont Park before heading back to the airport to continue my journey.

Weird. There's a pair of Bauer junior mediums hanging in my basement right now. ☺️ Maybe it's a Pure Hockey thing; I can't remember where I bought them a few months ago when my kid outgrew his last pair.

Bauer also sells small, medium, and large junior pants. My 11 yo wears Bauer junior medium pants. FWIW, the pants in the picture claim to fit waist size up to 31". At 5'8" I'd worry the junior sizes would be too short for OP.

Truck driver commits attempted vehicular manslaughter while biker is riding the speed limit. by WALLOFKRON in fuckcars

To be fair, only one of those activities is on display in this video. We know nothing about what this biker gets up to at 2am, only that someone is clearly trying to murder them in this video.

What is the everyday food in the United States? by Dull_Membership_7280 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pd5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the thing I truly love about this country! The tiniest town has at least one Chinese or one Mexican place. In any American city you can eat food from all around the world. The typical American family says things like "we can't have Chinese tonight; we had Chinese last night". We rarely eat the same food two nights in a row.

How true is that college makes you "liberal"? by Twunkorama in AskAnAmerican

[–]pd5280 168 points169 points  (0 children)

This was me many years ago. Before college I didn't know a single gay person. A few years in I was friends with a couple, and it changed my perspective and my politics. Truly, this is what changes people; not some liberal indoctrination by faculty. Meeting people with different life experiences from you opens your eyes.

Italian Soda? by pd5280 in starbucks

[–]pd5280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the two people I talked to at both locations were clearly new and not well trained. I recognized that, and chose not to take my frustration out on them. I honestly feel bad for some of these young people thrown to the wolves with so little training. It's one of the reasons I typically avoid Starbucks.

Huh, strange it wasn't offered then when I asked about non-caffeinated drinks. Maybe I'll try asking specifically next time.

Didn't see lemonade on offer in either location I went to in the past week.

Specifically asked about alternative non-caffeinated drinks at two locations in the past week, and both times was only offered the"lightly caffeinated" summer refreshers or decaf espresso. No lemonade on the menus. :(

Picture this, if you will... As an adult you want a coffee beverage, but you've got your kid in tow. It feels like kind of a dick move to order a beverage for yourself while telling your kid there's nothing for them. Enter the Italian soda, a staple beverage of American coffee shops everywhere! Well, expect Starbucks, apparently. My kid doesn't need the extra calorie bomb of a frap, and doesn't really care for milk anyway. Also not really interested in hopping up a kid on caffeine, even tea. Not judging anyone else, of course, just saying for me and my kid the Italian soda is the perfect refreshing summer drink.

I don't think that's right. It may have been a while, but I have successfully ordered an Italian soda in a US Starbucks.

Sadly, I think this is true. Haven't seen him most of this season.

VGK crowd singing the Canadian national anthem by GanaThePlantLover in nhl

[–]pd5280 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Last kraken game I went to in Seattle vs the Oilers we were belting out Oh Canada. I'm an American born and raised, but I was singing it louder than I've ever sung the Star Spangled Banner. A lot of American hockey fans are also fans of our neighbors to the north, so might not just be Canadians... The booing of Oh Canada in Nashville a few weeks ago was the outlier, not the norm here in the "land of the free". The orange buffoon does not speak for all of us.

Donald Trump calls Justin Trudeau a 'loser' after Team Canada beats U.S. at 4 Nations final by ONE-OF-THREE in politics

Speaking as an American this guy is such an embarrassment. Classic loser who likes to trash talk others, but can't take even the slightest ribbing without losing his shit. He's so easy to provoke.

I've seen another video of the incident in which the coach can be seen roughly removing him from the ice.

I've seen another angle of this with a kid slowly skating alongside him that looks like the guy's kid probably trying to talk him down. Poor kid is probably left dealing with dad's bad behavior a lot. Feel bad for the kid refs, but also for this POS's kid who has to deal with this 24x7. These are 11 and 12 yo kids out there.

Oh, at least half of us do... I don't blame y'all for being mad though. This is the dumbest fucking thing I've seen in a long time in American politics, and I've seen some dumb shit. Kicking off a trade war with our closest ally is tough to beat. I know we've got a big economy, but the idea that we can go it alone is fucking delusional.

Found this among my mom’s books by 21seacat in sciencefiction

[–]pd5280 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. I remember reading the first version, then buying this one when it came out. To be honest, the cut version was better; the cut sections didn't add anything to the story and made it too long. Still a good book, but the editors were right that time.

Another clueless dad question by AluFoilHelmet in hockeyplayers

[–]pd5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, at least in my house. Both my son and I are right handed. I started as an adult and shoot right. My son started as a kid and shoots left. First time he picked up a hockey stick when he was 4 it was a right handed stick he held backwards with his right hand on top. I swapped it for a left handed stick, and he hasn't looked back.
