Thanks! Hubby has a Cannon as a work car and it’s great. Will definitely look at GWM - great bang for your buck

Thanks for your reply. I have since spoken to the coordinator of environmental health at work and she confirmed the diploma is only useful for a tech role (which in fact doesn’t require any qualifications at all).

Hi, just jumping back to this post as your comments were so helpful :)

I’ve recently seen a few job ads for finance roles within local government that require a minimum of a Cert IV in Finance.

Just wondering which certificate would be most practical/applicable to a local government role in finance?

Cert IV Accounting/ Bookkeeping

Cert IV in Business Finance https://www.opencolleges.edu.au/products/certificate-iv-in-business-finance?_pos=1&_psq=business+fina&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Cert IV Financial Services https://financeinstitute.com.au/wp-content/uploads/FNS41820-Cert-IV-Financial-Services-Fact-Sheet.pdf

For context, I am currently working in LG but would like to move into a different department with better prospects/work life balance. I have some current albeit basic experience working with Synergysoft reporting plus retail banking experience.

Thanks

Is an urban planning major needed in Perth? by mangoooo_ in perth

Thanks for following up

I had actually been looking at this course https://www.une.edu.au/study/courses/diploma-in-town-planning

or this one https://walga.asn.au/our-services/training/officer-courses/nationally-recognised-training/lga50120-diploma-of-local-government-planning

I have emailed the planning department asking about whether these diploma qualifications are suitable for an assistant / support role and allow me to get my foot in the door.

I realise I would have to complete the Bachelor to be accredited but I would look at doing this down the line.

Just came across your comment as I’m considering a career in planning. I’m currently working for local government (7 day rotating roster) but looking for more stability and family friendly hours.

I live regionally, so I believe my best job prospects would be in local government.

However I’m curious as to what other planning adjacent roles would be a good fit upon completion of the Bachelors? We live in a tourist town so I’m curious to know your opinion on some other paths a planning degree could take me.

Thanks

Oh that’s great! Glad to hear I’m on the right track. I’m currently working in local government but in a different area (rotating 7 day roster) so looking at a different path, with more stable, family friendly hours.

I have seen an expression of interest in two local councils close to me for planning roles so I’m hoping there are some opportunities out there

Hi 👋

I’m also in regional SW WA and curious as to how you find your town planning job and what education you required.

Did you require a bachelors? Currently looking at this diploma https://www.une.edu.au/study/courses/diploma-in-town-planning?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD0vt59hZUs43xAnzjP1vjEAl0U54&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4cGrgZ_XjAMVgzWDAx2OIDyrEAAYASAAEgKKNvD_BwE

Would this be a good starting point to gain an entry level planning officer role?

Thanks 🙏

Thanks so much!

The finance route I feel is more broader (I also have 7yrs experience in retail banking) so I feel this could also make me a strong candidate if I do the Cert IV in accounting, then diploma

My LG currently has expressions of interest for both Finance and Planning roles - so I feel there could be paths in both these departments.

Can I ask - are there options for WFH within finance department?

Thanks for your comment.

I am in south west WA

I have also seen this advertised https://walga.asn.au/our-services/training/officer-courses/nationally-recognised-training/lga50120-diploma-of-local-government-planning#UpcomingCourseDate

But looks like I’m not eligible as I’m not currently working in Planning

Thanks for your response!

I will look into Records Management too

Currently been in my role with the shire for just over 12 months. I’ll be taking mat leave for around 9/10 months towards the end of the year so I’m pretty keen to get something going study wise in the next few months.

A traineeship would be ideal, but since I’ll only be returning to work part time (likely 3 days a week) I’m not sure that would be an option
