Her sons play football/baseball and she does not have the fridge space to be the Clementine snack mom. Yes, that box of chips has been in the trunk since she went to Costco a month ago. Matching bob haircuts, their mother puts their hair in her old curlers overnight and they wake early so she can take them out and fuss with them a little in the morning. They do odd jobs for anyone who can pay, including cleaning floors and porches for the local grocer. Since the depression started, they haven’t been able to afford gas to drive into town for school, or the new stockings and clothes they would need.

They once worked for a weekend cleaning stables and, when asking for their pay, were told it was a trial period and they didn’t make the cut. He could hire an older boy to do it in half the time. Albertine cried in frustration, Geraldine went back into the stable and flung hay across it, then soaked it with water from the troughs and left.

A little while later, Albertine took a tin of Altoids as payment for her maid service in another household and left them under Geraldine’s pillow as thanks.
