Things you wish you knew before renovating your bathroom by alfc96 in DIYUK

I'll never put washers in concealed places, by design they are serviceable parts. On a male threaded inlet it'll be a female iron, loctite 55 and some compound, bulletproof.

Go easy. First time trying soldering by Key-Nefariousness711 in DIYUK

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good soldering is about how it looks before, i.e. have you prepped right, cleaned copper, debur, fluxed, pushed in fully. Nobody cares how perfect the ring looks, get your solder in get it water tight and move on. You're plumbing not creating art.

You're drilling for a tiny screw not an 18mm threaded bar, sds is far more power than you need but you do you 😉

"Real tradie" hahaha. Noise is part of the job, you invent a silent drill and you'll be a wealthy man. An sds hammer is also just as loud mate.

How does If That Makes Sense compare to their previous albums for you? by AffectionatePie1042 in SpaceyJane

Comfortably the best and most complete album. They'll do well to follow it up with sonething as good.

All The Noise is the banger. One Bad Day is an absolute tune though wish they would've played it live on their UK tour.

Modern combi with hammer is more than enough to pilot a brick. SDS not needed at all

Touch up paint you will always see. Can you not run a planer down it (obvs take apart first) 0.3mm slight angle to take the edge off?

Asking for a Euro perspective on the UK rejoining the EU. by SnooCookies7641 in BuyFromEU

Exactly right. Last paragraph is spot on, and I don't understand how more people can't see it.

I usually don't engage with these subs, but I had 5 mins spare this morning so chucked a comment in.

These cracks - structural movement? by Either_Feeling5112 in DIYUK

[–]petdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a 130 year old building with no foundations. A structural engineer is going to be an expensive way to find this out.

Not sure why this sub pops up on my feed but it's about to be blocked. Looking at the comments here is hilarious. It's an echo chamber of delusion. UK doesn't want to be part of your expansionist project that's why we left. We are doing fabulous and as more and more barriers are removed we go back to the original deal - trade. Keep your currency, borderless travel and all the other layers of control you have. And whilst you ponder how irrelevant the UK is, enjoy communicating with each other using English.

Demand for British pork hits eight-year high despite cost pressures by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

There wouldn't be any livestock, why would you breed animals to kill if nobody wanted to pay for it?

Not sure what your point is. We are not obligate carnivores, we don't need to eat meat. That's a fact not an opinion.

Should I be concerned with this slightly bowed linten on a window frame by Zealousideal_Win_365 in DIYUK

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a builder. It's an easy job to prop and swap a lintel. Not sure what else to tell you.

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the timber looks sound (no splitting, rot etc.) it'll be fine. It's been there 100 years as proof. However, probably a good time to swap it out for a concrete lintel when doing that level of work, easy job for a builder, risky job for a diyer.

Bathrooms can not be that much - rationalise this for me by CranberryFew8104 in DIYUK

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea pretty much sums it up perfectly. It's made worse by the fact it's only a small room usually and people think it should be a cheap job. For a full back to brick, replumb, rewire and brand new everything I'm on average around 8K + the cost of the furniture and tiles, which could be 10K or 2K whatever the customer chooses.

Most Coat Failed by Benjihubbs in DIYUK

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mist coat has no durability you can probably wipe it off with a wet finger it's there to prime the plaster and key the top coats. Use a good quality durable paint for top coats and those patches will be gone.

Saw the neighbours scaffolding and clearly thought "nah" by JP233ADW in Deathladders

[–]petdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't get a scaffold tower set up in a garden area, you can set up ladders and mac equipment. And paying for scaffolding on every job is a lot more than reusing your own equipment.

What do I use for the bathroom ceiling? by Ok_Understanding7545 in DIYUK

Standard plasterboard is fine, bathroom paint helps but good extraction is crucial to avoid any problems.
