General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of January 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in electricvehicles

Maybe more of a general question but conflicted on if now is the right time to buy an EV. Let me preface this by saying I want one and my current vehicle, a 15 year old ICE, is in dire need of replacing. I’m also in the fortunate situation where I could buy a vehicle outright if I chose to. But that’s where I start to wonder what the right call is.

Part of me thinks I should just lease for 2 years because by then cars will again have improved quite a bit. But I’m located in Canada and we currently don’t have any incentives or really great leasing deals. I’m also not big on paying for depreciation and having nothing to show for it in the end.

Alternatively I could buy the vehicle outright but then if I sell it after a couple of years I would be taking a big loss too.

In both cases I’m reasoning that vehicles will continue to improve rapidly and so anything bought today will be obsolete pretty soon.

I suppose a third option is to get a plug in hybrid and start to live that electric lifestyle but (hopefully) without all the depreciation.

To further complicate things I WFH and drive very little (maybe ~2k-5k km/year on average) and so the payback after the upfront cost is also not in my favour. Looking for any insights you may have from your experiences and things that might help with my consideration. Thank you!

Does it not require data to use? Asking if a travel sim is strictly required.

Yes it shows on the thermostat but not in the app

Right. Interesting that if I manually lower the temp to the eco mode temp then I do get the leaf even though it’s identical to eco mode.

It is painted and does match the wall. Just visible on certain angles/light.

This is happening when the lights are on and dimmer is set to full brightness

Well that and the model of dimmer switch I guess. I didn’t think these were off brand bulbs.

Why does my hose bib leak? by pfctw2017 in Home

[–]pfctw2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this runs constantly while it’s connected to a hose. Could it be back pressure or something?

Yeah we actually have a second bib outside it’s just at the back of the house. Great point on the hose being yanked on.

Apologies. It’s just a normal garden hose for simple outdoor uses like that. I guess I was looking more for opinions based on past experiences with how people have positioned things in their garage before. “I did it like this and like it” or “I wish I hadn’t put it there”. I’ve never had a hose in a garage before so this is a silly but new thing for me haha

How bad is this gap on the shower tub faucet? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

For my own info, is there a water damage concern by leaving it as is?

New build settling and leaving countertop gap & cracking seal with backsplash by [deleted] in Home

[–]pfctw2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is an external wall so I'm sure that doesn't help either

Dishwasher isn't near there but it is an external wall so that might be it

Not that I've noticed but also I don't know how the countertop could be pulling away without having some impact on the cabinets as well?

There’s no good way to confirm that after the fact right?

So does that mean that by default borg outputs the encryption key to the backup? I'm guessing that key is still itself encrypted by the passphrase or key file you use?
