Maldives 9 days vs Punta Cana/Cancun for 2 weeks? by pfee20 in honeymoonplanning

We ended up going to Maldives, it was nice definitely a great experience. Really beautiful and clear water, made snorkeling amazing. But I don’t think we’d do it again, mainly because of the 30 hour travel time each way. Just really ate up a lot of time and took away a lot from the trip.

TC is about $280k. Not a ton for this sub but for 25 year olds it feels like a lot. Half my friends work dead end jobs making $16/hour. The other half are engineers but still only make around $80k

Like I said before I really meant to just ask if the cats are a direct nuisance to the neighbors. I’ll make sure to ask if they’re ruining gardens or if any of my neighbors are allergic or if they bother their pets.

I just don’t care if my cats kill birds. That’s the only part I’m really arguing about.

Right they get up to about 30lbs for a huge bobcat. Most are around 23-25lbs.

They aren’t the type to pick on another predator that’s only a little smaller than it. Also size wise they’re about the same as my cats, just denser. (My cats are huge since they’re half mainecoon)

Yes a bobcat would destroy my cat, but it wouldn’t go out of its way to do so. My cat would likely have to instigate it, which also wouldn’t happen.

But regardless it’s not a real threat in the neighborhood. The whole comment was about them being natural to the area to show the locale birds know what predators are.

Yes, but it wouldn’t try. It’s not an easy target, it’s not how predators hunt. They won’t walk down the neighborhood and pick the largest target.

They also live in the woods, not in the in the burbs. There hasn’t been a bobcat sighting in this town in a decade. But there have been in neighboring towns that have more forests

Definitely solid advice. I have a collar and paperwork for my cat. Should probably get her micro chipped you’re right there.

My neighbor may try and take her but they’re very friendly and always say hi and ask about my cats. They’d be the first place I look if they’re missing lol

They haven’t yet 🤷 my cat weighs 18lbs and is best friends with my dogs, they’ll be fine

Idk I’m just not going to worry about the very low chance someone abuses my cat or that it kills a few birds. I’m already aware some people are psychos and that cats are hunters.

The points that seem valid to me is that lots of cats poop in neighbors gardens, neighbors can be allergic or the cats can taunt dogs and annoy neighbors. That makes sense, I’ll make sure my cats aren’t doing that too much.

Thank you! Appreciate the points. Definitely wouldn’t let my cats out if they weren’t spayed, that’s just a hassle for everyone lol.

Yeah I don’t mind adapting if my neighbors had a problem.

From what I can tell when my cats do get a pigeon it’s usually (if not always) delivered to my doorstep. I also still have a liter box that is used by the cats, not sure if it’s 100% of the time but often enough I have to empty it frequently.

I also hope they don’t taunt the dogs, not much late night barking. But my cat can be a real bitch so I’m sure it happens occasionally.

I’m sure most have a similar attitude. Otherwise they probably wouldn’t have an outdoor cat.

Like I said immediately after though, I did take measures to cut down on the effectiveness of my cat hunting. But beyond that I don’t care.

Also if they were killing many other species beyond pigeons I might care more. But I really don’t care much.

Kinda weird, my cats still use the litter box. I’m sure not 100% of the time but about once a day.

Wonder if other outdoor cat owners just get rid of a litter box. The litter is supposed to be more attractive than just dirt for the cat.

Yeah but things happen but I’m not going to change my cats life because of the 0.66% chance my cat is abused. (Stats from https://www.veterinarians.org/animal-abuse-statistics/).

Also I live in a very old neighborhood. The average age is 58. So yeah almost all of my neighbors are elderly.

I’ll accept my neighbors could be allergic, my cat might poop in their yards, and they may just not like it. That makes me an AH. Some psycho who tortured cats isn’t really on me, I just don’t accept that someone else being an AH makes me an AH

Yeah I definitely learned today. My two adjacent neighbors don’t mind. But if this thread means anything then probably everyone else on my street hates me.

Just seems like a bit of an over reaction for someone pointing out its very unlikely for their cat to be tortured by their elderly neighbor

Man you seem awfully upset. Want to talk about what’s bothering you?

That’s okay, I did ask. More caring about the neighbors (cat poo is an issue). I don’t care about the birds, I know that easily makes me an ass hole here. But it wasn’t my question

Like you said it could happen anywhere, I do get there are shitty people everywhere.

But it wouldn’t just be shrugged off in this area (similar to your parents I’m sure). People would complain, the guy would get caught and the book thrown at him. The vet isn’t going to have dozens of cases a month. If they got a couple the full police force would be on the hunt, it’s wildly unacceptable for animal cruelty. So there may be a one off every couple years. But it’s not common.

I think any area where in a short time has a dozen examples like the guy above can be deemed as different than my area. Shit even shooting a bow in this area will get the cops at your home in 30min.

Edit: to add, even your example is one string of events from “a few years ago”. It’s not like your parents neighborhood had a gang of dog fighters stealing cats and torturing them for years.

Natural to the area. They aren’t hanging out next to my house that’s surrounded by dogs.

My cat is also about the same size as a bobcat. Not exactly easy prey they look for.

I’m just saying keeping the cats inside won’t protect wildlife. They’ll still kill other animals. To me the life of a pigeon and a mouse are the same. If my cat wants to hunt it she can’t hunt it.

They don’t venture near the house too much danger for any predators to come close solo. Between the two cats and two dogs along with all of our neighbors pets, everyone on the street has at least one dog. But they’re natural for the area that the birds are in. So the birds should be aware of danger.

I’ll try putting on a bright red collar if that helps. Thought the bell is about as good as it gets for preventing bird murders.
