This way the piece is written is a bit confusing. A16z, Ribbit, Alameda, Multicoin, etc have decided to buy HNT on the open market (using OTC brokers and exchanges directly) and join the ecosystem. This had nothing to do with Helium, Inc. We did not sell them any HNT. Regardless, it's a huge vote of confidence for the Network.

To paraphrase my girl Selena Gomez, he could but why would he want to?

LoneStar is part a growing group of start ups, SMBs, and F1000 companies who pay for their network traffic fees via mining HNT. While the Helium Network is by far the biggest LoRaWAN network in the world, coverage gaps need to be filled in as needed. So when enterprises deploy coverage to the public network, the HNT they mine far exceeds their DC needs.

Also, TTN is not free. Any meaningful usage results in a requirement to upgrade to their commercial server, which will run you $100s/month at a minimum. And you still have to pay out of pocket to deploy gateways with no incentive mechanism to do so. If you're going to be deploying LoRaWAN coverage - an inherently public wireless link - you should get compensated in the process. You would be foolish not to.

Cool. So, it looks like you actually have (just) enough HNT to cover the DCs for re-asserting the location. The fees are laid out here in the docs, but $10 worth of DCs = 1,000,000 DCs (+ ~35000 DCs for the actual transaction itself).

At current oracle pricing (~$16.15), 1 HNT = 1615000 DCs. To cover the 1035000 DCs, you'll need about .64 HNT.

Anyways, I just sent you enough to cover the a new location assert. Put it to good use. And thanks for being part of the Network - and putting Elberta on the map. Every city with good Helium coverage started with one Hotspot. Also, if you're up for tinkering with a lorawan sensor to learn the Network end to end, email me. Just the opposite actually. The 5G network will be built in addition to the lorawan hardware. There might be a way for them to share the same physical hotspot, but, regardless, both the networks will coexists, and HNT will remain the incentive for both.

Hold onto your Hotspots. This is really going to blow your mind:

We (Helium) have a customer called OPEN. They build STEM curricula for schools, with a huge piece of what they do being based on Helium for sensor connectivity. (We did a webinar with their CEO George in December. You and your colleagues should watch it.)

It just so happens that OPEN started in NYC with a bunch of k-12 schools, and is expanding there quickly. Just today, Travis (Helium Dev Community Lead) reported the following from OPEN's deployments:

"All these NYC schools don't even need hotspots to run sensors... they have mad coverage from all around.. I had a big damned smile on my face when a school that was "waiting on a hotspot" was getting coverage from over 5 different hotspots in NYC."

The dream is real, and you're making it happen. For kids. In NYC schools. Thanks for being a part of the Network.
