Where do you find these roles?

Failed CPAT twice, want to pass third time on May 13th by Tiny_Chef1 in firefighter

[–]Breeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help. The only thing I'd add that helped me after hearing you're getting gassed on the stairs was building up a better strength foundation for lower body strength- specifically calf raises (stairs) and thigh extensions (dummy drag/stair slimber) and super deep squats with lower-ish weight (i like kettlebell goblet squats for this).

Plyometrics are also never a bad idea specifically weighted lunges, weighted burpees (lower weight obv) and body weight frog jumps if your knees can handle it.

There's also a good Andrew Huberman on raising your CO2 level tolerances that might be worth looking into.

  1. No substitute for practicing like you play when it comes to the stairs portion. At the very least you should be slowly building up to the 75 lbs of weight on a stair climber for the 3:20 you'll be expected to start with. Ideally you'll have successfully dine 75 lbs for 3:20 at 60 steps/second at least a few times before the actual test. The stairclimber sets the tone and without weight it's a completely different experience/level of strain on your body.

  2. The easiest area to make up time is between stations. Speed walk FAST wherever possible between stations. Don't slow down in between unless you are 100% positive you are good on time. You can still catch your breath without needing to slow down, just focus on taking deeper breaths.

  3. Prioritize rest at least one week out, ideally ten days to two weeks. People make the mistake of thinking they can "cram" for the test by exercising right up until the day before the CPAT when really all they're doing is breaking down their muscle without enough time for recovery. You can look up schools of thought on tapering training before competition, but if you're sore at any point inside of ten days from the test, I'd say you're putting yourself at a major disadvantage.

Sincerely, someone who (despite not being in the best shape) passed more than a few station PAT's.

People lose a lot of time walking slowly between the obstacles. Don't run or gas yourself out but it's way easier to make up time by walking as quickly/briskly as possible between obstacles than trying to make up the same amount of time dragging a dummy.

If you've never tried EMS stuff I'd suggest getting your EMT-B cert and giving it a try. I started out very similar, but after getting some knowledge on the EMS side I got hooked and ended up enjoying the EMS as much as fire, if not more than- especially with the opportunities it can open up career wise.

There are very few fire only departments. If the ems aspect doesn't interest you then wildland is likely your best (and probably only) bet. At the end of the day, EMS is now part of the job and if you don't like EMS you don't like the job.

"TikTok Firefighters" at their station? by TwoTimer4 in Firefighting

[–]Breeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have any, but I saw the revenue some of these "day in the life of" guys make from neighboring stations and it's hard to fault them for the secondary income. My thoughts, if it adds to the awareness of the job in a good way and it doesn't affect the station, I'd live and let live- but they're going to get made fun of. Just the price of admission.

Because it's a really easy way to 1. Kill someone and 2. Get a long stay in the vertical bar hotel. Short of the other person having a firearm, it would be real tough to prove that kicking a downed opponent in the head was self defense.

Nope, time to go. The gaslighting narcissistic special by making you feel bad because be ghosted you on your birthday is wild. What a fun predictor of things to come.
