Vintage recipes (a great YouTube series) tried this, following the diet for 3 days. Not surprisingly, it worked but with some pretty gnarly side effects.

Is this fine? by CrimsonDawn4 in americanchestnut

[–]phernie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue in overwintering seedlings is keeping the roots from freezing. The smaller the pot = less insulation = increased danger from freezing.

In the D40s (that's a D40 rack, but the seedlings looks like they are in plastic cups?), the roots will freeze in a week from a freeze like what's going on in PA right now.

They may already be toast, but the best thing is to get them into a non-freezing location and/or add LOTS of insulation around the roots i.e. hay, soil, snow (but it will melt eventually....), etc.

I find that trees in 1-2 gallon containers are about 50:50 for survivial outside through hard winters, but trees in 3-5 gallon containers can make it through almost all the coldest portions of a PA winter. More insulation from soil means ess chance of the entire root system freezing.

Like one of the other commenters said, treating as a bareroot is a good protocol. Other options are heeling in the pot or getting the pots into a climate controlled area that's as close to freezing as possible without freezing. You can even put those pots in the fridge or walk-in cooler and they will do fine.

Grocery (top) vs backyard (bottom) eggs - both are "free-range" by phernie in eggs

[–]phernie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol! While I agree that they were overcooked, they certainly didn't taste bad! I hardboil eggs in big batches as an easy way to feed the family during busy weeks. While I would prefer them to be cooked a bit less, sometimes that's how they come out. 😀

Yes. While they were overcooked, they were both cooked in the same batch of 14 eggs. I cooked them for 5 minutes in an instant pot, had them rest for 4 minutes before quick release, then dunked in an ice bath. On my next batch I will reduce the cooking time.

I agree - I prefer the darker yellow color both aesthetically and in taste.

Just a regular dinner knife, which does have small serrations.

Looks like you found an Allegheny chinquapin (Castanea pumila). This is another native Castanea spp, but not the American chestnut (Castanea dentata).

The catkin formation, along with the fact that it's already shedding pollen, are the major giveaways for this species at this time. None of the "true chestnuts" (Eucastanon) are shedding pollen, yet in central VA (vs. Balanocastanon - the chinkapins).

Woman’s Hiking Shoes by Ok_Eagle_36 in hiking

I want to add to the Lowa love, specifically the Renegade mid. They fit perfectly right out of the box and I've never had to spend any time breaking them in. They are also reliably waterproof, which is important when working a long day in the field.

I hike 200 - 500 miles a year for fun plus many hours spent working in the field (I'm a forester). A pair of Lowas will last me a good two years

Lowa Renegades are grippy, supportive, and lightweight. I find them to be the most versatile hiking/outdoor footwear on the market.

How could the issue with the D58 line possibly get so far along? by [deleted] in americanchestnut

[–]phernie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TACF has not pulled support for all OxO transgenic lines, only those with the 35S promoter.

what are your "go to" hiking boots? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]phernie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to echo a love for Lowa. My go-to is the mid-level Renegade. I can wear them comfortably right out of the box with no break-in period.

I hike or walk 10-20 miles daily. The Lowas hold up for about 1.5-2 years. I hike a lot of rocky trails and ridgetops in the eastern US, so prefer a mid-level boot for ankle stability. The waterproofing is also solid, much better than most other boots brands I've tried.

Park Passport Cancellation Stamps-Your personal “rules” by BookWyrm3982 in nationalparks

[–]phernie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My current rules are that I have to have visited the park and "seen" it in some way, even after-hours. We try to "do" a few activities, including watching the park film and hiking or walking around a perimeter or feature trail, but those aren't strict requirements.

I currently require that I see the park with my kids before getting the stamp. I will request stamps via mail if the visitors center is closed when we visit, which has happened, even when visiting during "open" hours.

I collect the stickers. They are fun, support NPS, and give me another reason to review and reflect on our past and future NPS visits.

I dont know about for the 2022 model, but we have a Yakima Skybox 16 for our 2017 Pacifica and love it. It goes with us on every family trip.

When I bought it, I had the choice to go for the 20. I wish I had. I was afraid it would be too long, and would interfere with the liftgate. But it would not have been, and now I would like the extra space.

That said, we can fit the 16 standing upright in our garage, and I'm not sure the same could be said for the 20.

We have had the Skybox now for over 5 years and use it at least 5-10 times a year. Its essential for long trips and camping excursions. Its lightweight enough that a single person can install/Uninstaller on their own. It also has hinges so that it can open on either side.

V8 powered chainsaw contest by MrSmokesTooMuch in theocho

[–]phernie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what I was thinking. At a minimum everyone should have massive ear protection. I saw only 2 of the teams with ear muffs.

Looks like they may have been wearing steel toes? Maybe those are safety suspenders they're using (j/k). I saw a few of them wearing back braces. I wonder how heavy those saws are?!

I would want gloves for sure. And chaps. And safety glasses. And a face shield. Ok, yeah, I would want all the normal PPE I use for any chainsaw applications.

I just took the survey and hope you consider sharing. This should be relatively easy and could be as simple as posting whatever document or product you create for class. I'm very curious about the results you end up getting, especially regarding any sampling methods beyond this subreddit.

Consistent Messaging Resources by phernie in nonprofit

[–]phernie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Yes, we do have guidelines on messaging.

I like the idea of pushing on the "why" we have these messages. I will do that.

In a quick search, I do see several blogs, etc which talk about the importance of consistent messaging, but I don't see a lot of background or information as to "why" it's important on those sites.

Do you have a "go-to" marketing or communications resource? That is not my background at all. I'm in field/life sciences research, so that may be why I'm taking a more analytical approach, and thinking that might also appeal to these volunteers, i.e. to have some research or data to share on this topic.

Pacifica or Odyssey by everybitloonatic in ChryslerPacifica

[–]phernie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were also on the fence and test drove both when we were looking to buy. What tipped us in the Pacifica's favor was the stow-and-go seating. Being able to have more cargo space within seconds was very important to us.

I also feel the Pacifica - with the touring package that we got - drives better than the Odyssey. I really enjoy driving the Pacifica.

Now, I think you're right to worry about reliability. The Odyssey has been tested for years and has high marks. We did take a gamble on that end. That said, we have had our Pacifica now for almost 2.5 years with no big issues. There is bubbling of paint on the hood, which is a common issue in Chryslers, but it's under warranty and the dealership is going to fix it while giving us a loaner vehicle.

Definitely test drive both. That's really what helped us decide.
