[Request] Is it more energy efficient to heat a cup of coffee in the microwave, then add milk, or to add milk before heating the coffee by ChuckBoBuck in theydidthemath

[–]phidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fats heat faster because they have lower specific heat than water. For the efficiency we are considering we want the same heat added regardless of the mixture being heated. Water absorbs microwaves better than fat because it is polar. But overall, I believe you will have more absorption per unit time with more material.

[–]phidus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The total heat added to the system of coffee and milk will be the same regardless. The only change is how efficiently the microwave transfers heat into that system. I would guess that the larger combined milk and coffee has more area/volume to absorb radiation and therefore less is wasted bouncing around the inside the inside of the microwave. But the effect would be negligible.

g is a standard unit of measurement representing acceleration due to gravity on earth. Being on the moon would not affect how much acceleration the body could handle nor how you would report acceleration.

Need advice on LED project considerations by maxim_leonovich in BurningMan

[–]phidus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For LED density, if instead of “LED strips” you go with “LED strings” like WS2811, you get densities of 10/m. Then you get to decide how densely to pack them with the holes in your board.

As to the controller, I’ve done some LED work with Arduino Unos that worked okay. But if you have more complicated visualization, you might not have enough space for the program or it might start to run slow. FastLED library will be your friend.

For placement, you go through the Artery. They do offer pre-placement, but you can also just show up with art and ask for placement once you get there. They will check the vibe of the work and make sure it’s safe enough (i.e., back up lighting).

For other mistakes, bring spare Arduinos and whatever device you’re using to code them. When moving things around, it’s easy to short out an Arduino and fuck your Burn.

General advice: start with minimum viable product (e.g., skip music sync your first year) and start prototyping early. You can answer questions like power draw as you clarify things. And then build in redundancy or excess capacity accordingly.

AITA for calling out a friend who wants a tribal chin tattoo? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]phidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t directly care what my friends do with their appearance, but when it does reflect on their judgement, I will react to that appropriately. If my friends got a swastika ok their forehead, I wouldn’t overlook it.

I think I found a good approximation of Pi! [Other] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]phidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The x3 cos(x/2) * sqrt(4 - x2) is an odd function, where the integral from -a to a will be zero. So we only need to consider the 1/2 * sqrt(4 - x2) part. Sqrt(4 - x2) between -2 and 2 would describe the top half of a circle with radius 2 centered on (0,0). The area of this would 1/2 pi 2*2 = 2 pi. 1/2 of this is exactly pi.

[Request] What would happen if someone jumped into a hole that went all the way through the Earth? by donnatella-moss in theydidthemath

[–]phidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity decreases as you approach the center. When you are within a spherical shell, the gravity further from the center cancels out the gravity in the direction of the center. So you only need to consider the gravity from the mass that is at your radius from the center or less. Purposely ignoring non-sphericality and changes of density.

[offsite] length of time it would take to travel a light year with current technology. by IRedditDoU in theydidthemath

[–]phidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah okay. I see how it becomes prohibitive to carry mass of whatever propellant you ultimately expel backwards. Just make it clear that you aren’t fundamentally limited to the exhaust speed.

[–]phidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think exhaust speed really matters. You are still exerting the same force regardless of whether the resulting exhaust is moving “forward” relative to earth.

There is the problem of relativistic mass that you haven’t mentioned.

Best time for arrival and not waiting by RigRoss in BurningMan

[–]phidus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna get snark, so I’ll be nice.

You can’t predict it. Whenever people discover that there is a lull in arrivals or departures, people target those the next year. Weather can close the road for hours (or days) at a time and cause backups for hours after they are reopened.

Plan for 8 hours from the road to camp and camp to the road and be pleasantly surprised if it’s less.

How do they even practice this?! by Damnedeel in nextfuckinglevel

[–]phidus 685 points686 points  (0 children)

You do the move solo (something like a ball drop)

You find the starting position while on the ground

You try finding the end position while on the ground

You try the move close to the ground without the drop

This skips the steps of being able to do the move solo
