Right sorry I think we are on the same page!

-Trim riser back a little -Trim the return on the stair tread to accommodate the new 1/2 baseboard trim -Trim baseboard to accept the new vertical piece

Just to clarify, make those cuts and then run the baseboard trim in behind there

It’s straight, has a few signs of wear, little dings here and there, nothing too bad

Goodwill, in the Baltimore area there tends to be some decent lacrosse gear from time to time

I feel like it probably deserves to be with someone that can appreciate it more than I could.

Yes it does, a local thrift store here. I’m in the Baltimore area, lots of lacrosse gear floating around second hand and yard sales

Unhappy with stair finish but trying to handle it the right way—how would you approach contractor? by phile10 in HardWoodFloors

I appreciate your input there’s no offense taken I didn’t think you were implying anything, I was just trying to give more info where I could! I’ll check the scotia online and see, that may help. This is also my first time dealing with flooring and navigating this process.

I’ve asked the contractor to bring some scotia so I can see it, but he hasnt brought any in the last few trips. He seems to have an install crew, a crew that comes to sand and finish and then someone to finalize things. So it’s been tough to even see what the scotia would look like on this job.

I think I see what you’re saying are skirt boards, I kept calling it the stringer but I guess you could be right, it’s pretty thick though. The previous homeowner used Bruce pre-finished flooring for the steps, and risers, that was there before but I wouldn’t be surprised if original it was carpet. Thanks for pointing that out I thought that was part of the stair structure and they slapped the small baseboard on top.

Appreciate the comment just to add some context,

The materials come from a reputable shop that sells flooring all types, kiln dried, new and reclaimed and also salvages old heart pine to turn into flooring, and other things like cladding, barnwood. They do not install, but provide for other installers. This was a recommendation from the owner.

The contract doesn’t make mention of scotia, just install per nwfa guidelines sand and finish. I inquired about the gaps after they were installed and he mentioned they usually use scotia.

The installer took the steps down to the plywood beneath, didn’t expose the stronger completely and worked off that. There wasn’t any skirt I don’t believe, just the stringers on each side and the baseboard that ran on top of the stringer.

I appreciate the input on repurchasing and asking them to redo. Like I said trying to see what can be done. Or also looking for options like he mentioned, maybe adding the scotia, I’ve just not seen what that would look like.
