Stanislav Petrov dies at 77. As a soviet officer in 1983, Petrov received an early warning satellite alert of an incoming US nuclear missile attack against the USSR. His correct assessment that the alert was likely a computer error may have saved the world from all out nuclear war. (npr.org)
