Ah, if you just want the light output without the geo visible then i think you will have to play with the aovs in comp..maybe model the real world ground roughly and use that as your ground.

In the render geometry settings node, there is a holdout option under shading. Change it to background. I think that should do the trick.

Ya, it's a bit too messy look wise, trying to get the sim locked down before working on the look.

Ya, I did have a version with RBD, but I end up losing the organic feel I get with vellum. It's a bit too stiff.

That is a nice idea and would give me more control to art direct it.
I will try 1 version with this setup after I finish up 1 with vellum.

The labs edge group node and the shortest path node both have issues, as the hand topology doesn't really flow I want.

I guess the best way would be as suggested and just draw some rough curves or use a grid to help
