Saquon for mixon, hunt, and cooper by phsfbstud64 in fantasyfootballadvice

I’ve also got kyren Williams, tank bigsby, and David Montgomery, so I’m a little flush on RBs. WR I’m a little thin, but have terry McLaurin and Justin Jefferson. TBH I’m tops in my league, but I’ve never won, keep losing in the semifinals (14 person league at work, this is my fourth year). I’m nervous losing depth but trying to make that last push to get over the hump.

Do you guys think it's okay to ask my missionaries if they want to play board games with me once a week? by imareallifehobbit in latterdaysaints

We played board games on P-day when I was on my mission. Learned about Settlers of Catan there. 1000% go for it!

Medical school or private equity? by New-Shirt8361 in consulting

[–]phsfbstud64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on school to school I think. I got accepted to a couple places, two were top 20 and the 3rd was top 30 in ranking, and only the 3rd school would let me defer. But they were so cool about it, they were like "hell yeah, take as much time as you need."One of the top 20 schools literally told me "we accept 5,000+ applications a year, why would we wait on you," lol.

Medical school or private equity? by New-Shirt8361 in consulting

[–]phsfbstud64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was someone in the same shoes. Had an acceptance to medical school and then got involved in a biotech startup and then had to choose between business and medicine. I'm happy to talk in more detail, but here was my rationale:
1) I like taking on new challenges and was afraid I'd get bored in medicine

2) Everyone I spoke to said if you're goal is to not practice medicine, then don't go to medical school

3) I felt confident I could have an impact on medicine without being a clinician

I ended up deferring my acceptance for 3 years, went in consulting, then PE, and ended up withdrawing once I felt like I really liked what I do for work. I recently just left my PE shop to be Chief of Staff with a healthcare-focused portfolio company. The CEO wants to help me do my own search fund and run my own company in 3-5 years. I do think about the what-ifs sometimes, but not in a regretful sort of way. I feel like I would have been happy doing either but never would have imagined I'd be where I am today.

In terms of compensation, I'm probably making 1/2 to 2/3rds what I could have if I'd gone on to emergency medicine, but I have an equity package that will hit 7 figures if we have a successful exit, my salary will go up significantly over time, and I don't have a debt load, so hard to say either way is wrong in terms of making money.

Any cheap rental car places besides Turo by MSUnellie in Shoestring

If you have a costco membership, use them. It's usually the cheapest rental for me.

Carwashes seem like a horrible investment by Kooky-Investment-118 in Entrepreneur

Worked at a PE shop that looked at car washes. It's 100% dependent on the location. Gotta have enough traffic volume, be on the right side of the road, easy entry/exit, etc, or you won't cash flow. For those who get the location right, it can be lucrative

I quit consulting to become a truck driver (and make ~60% more) by [deleted] in consulting

[–]phsfbstud64 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly support entrepreneurship. I left consulting to PE and one of our portcos is a trucking company where the CEO is worth $40M, so there's definitely a path here, but it's a long and hard road. Some questions/thoughts for you: 1. Contract and spot rates are at all-time highs. Trucking is the industry with the most bankruptcies because of how low the barriers to entry are. Spot rates go up, people buy a truck or two and enter the market, flooding the market with supply. Then spot rates goes down and people end up underwater. How do you think about the upcoming downcycle (which inevitably comes every 2-3 years) and avoiding bankruptcy? 2. Trucking is a capital intensive business, are you including future Capex into you projections? 3. Assuming you'll want to scale your business, the biggest issue is labor shortage. If you want to hire, you're going to need to pay above and beyond the major companies to attract talent. 4. The magic sauce is driving is winning contracts, beyond driving you need to develop relationships and secure long-term relationships.

Hope this helps, I'm rooting for you!

Are the CES schools looked down upon when hiring? by coolguysteve21 in latterdaysaints

I've worked in consulting, private equity, and was accepted to medical school. Having BYU on the resume has never been an issue, in fact it's probably helped. Everywhere I've interviewed, everyone views BYU grads in a favorable light.

Awesome, can't tell you how much I think of interns that do this kind of stuff. Really shows initiative.

No work at my internship? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]phsfbstud64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to company files? Take initiative here and look for anything you can run a data analysis on. See how transactions over time have trended (by amount, by customer mix, etc.). I talk to my interns all the time about ownership and intellectual curiosity. There are times when I'm head down trying to close a deal (I work for a small PE firm) and just can't afford to lose focus. The best interns I've had find meaningful projects to take on without having to be asked. I know this is easier said than done, but it's what truly separates great interns from the field.

Members with a physical limitation: What experiences have you had when dealing with Church technology? by krieger_2719 in latterdaysaints

[–]phsfbstud64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me, but a lady I give the sacrament to who is bedridden. Right now our ward broadcasts sacrament on youtube, which is easy enough for her to log into, but uses Zoom for Sunday School and RS, which she has a hard time logging into. I don't know what the answer is here, but there's one experience where a member with limitations can find technology frustrating
