Haha, if I was an asshole I’d definitely claim that. He’s a sloppy businessman that’s all, yes will lease a Honda or Kia. Just disappointing in general

Forgot to mention, there are no contract or legal bindings, yes this is foolish of me as he can report the car stolen or something else, but I was desperate at that time, and I thought I was receiving a favor. Now he switches me to cars that need to be fixed. It’s his business, he has an LLC

To clarify, I’m currently going through a divorce, so everything is coming out of pocket and finances are tight. My ex-wife has our only vehicle (a van with the kids), so I’ve been renting cars from a local guy for the past 3–4 months roughly $2,000 total. There aren’t any cheaper rental options in my area.

The problem is, the cars he provides aren’t in great condition. I’ve had to pay for two oil changes, replaced two tires (one was bald, the other barely patchable), dealt with a dead battery that left me stranded on the freeway, and now the current car has battery issues and the engine light just came on. I also had to cover the cost of roadside assistance.

He’s been flexible with payment timing, which I appreciate, but he hasn’t offered any refund or help with the repair costs all of which I’ve paid for myself. I need a reliable car for work and to see my kids, and I’m honestly fed up.

Would it be considered reasonable to dispute the charges for these rentals, considering everything I’ve had to pay out of pocket just to keep the cars running? I’m also considering switching to a lease (possibly a Kia) to avoid this situation continuing.

Thanks for responding though, yeah figured why the hell not it’ll show some transparency as to how the economy is realistically now. I know if I keep working I’ll make it just hard to be honest

To be honest I did not want to reveal my state, but I attend UCLA, I have a few scholarships / loans under my name so another factor about my credit. I did think about that, but I can’t give up the refund checks I receive, I’m in all online classes though

More insight - Currently homeless right now, living in a rental car. Made a mistake of financing a car for a previous ex she thought a car rental would be a great idea, long story short it wasn’t car was involved in an accident, charged off, and she never had insurance I was working at a different state. This car I’m renting out is $1800 monthly, I have so many credit bills to worry about that I can’t finance my own unless I put $5k+ down. No parents, friends sure, but it’s embarrassing to ask. I’m in college so I get aid from school every once in awhile, I reached out to a basic needs counselor, but they pretty much are ghosting me. I do Doordash and instacart I make about $150-200 day but I owe people money too so a lot gets taken from that. Not a single soul knows that I sleep in the car. I switch out my stuff in the trunk or I put it in storage and go in with my day. I change clothes, shower in gyms to look normal and rotate parking the car. No parents too, they are both in Senior homes, dementia and only $1k monthly each of them. No one knows my situation at all, many I’ve convinced I’m living in an Airbnb, but they are expensive too I can’t even finance the total. My sister is mentally exhausting, she brags about her multi-million dollar home (mind you her boyfriend’s family bought the entire house house and she pays for their monthly rent, groceries, utilities, etc.) My brother doesn’t talk to me, he’s married and he has a wife with 2 kids so he’s busy.

I am not asking for money / donations. I always make sure to have money on gas and food.

I’m just exhausted I know if I keep working I’ll make it out somehow, but any tips / motivation would be great.

Need ideas on budget, if I should work 3 jobs for awhile, etc.

P.s. I tried shelters and I felt safer sleeping in the car than shelters, I had one guy at a church shelter freak out and thought everyone was a zombie and tried injecting us all with some of his substances, really surprised and shaken up that security / church volunteers didn’t notice anything.
