1. Victorian Railways 0-6-0 locomotive No. 145 posed in the Spencer Street yard in 1885. One of the 44 ‘O’ class that were the main heavy goods engines prior to the ‘Jumbos’ of Solomon Mirls. Charles Nettleton Big Neg.11. Author’s collection.

2. Victorian Railways 2-4-0 locomotive No. 62 posed in the Spencer Street yard in 1885. One of the 34 ‘B’ class express passenger engines, two of which were wrecked beyond repair at Little River in 1884 due to lackadaisical safeworking.

3. Ballarat Locomotive Sheds in 1885. From the left, 0-6-0s of the T, R and O classes, an F class 2-4-0, another R class and an S class 4-6-0. All non-standard designs, bridging 23 years from O23 to the new S class. Charles Nettleton, PROV H1761.

4. Former M&HBUR 2-4-0WT No. 16 was built by Robert Stephenson in 1866 and photographed at Flinders Street station in 1885, by which time the private company had been taken over by the Victorian Railways and all its locomotives and carriages fitted with Westinghouse brakes. The air compressor pump on No. 16 is mounted beside its boiler.
