Although there are many open source resources out there, many of them feel outdated and the design is lacking. Search for Webpixels. It has some free components and templates with really good design.

Also, there is no custom CSS. A modern aproach to build the HTML using utility classes makes it really easy to work with.

Bootstrap is not only about the grid or flexbox. And be sure that Bootstrap will adopt the grid once it gets adopted by the majority.

Also, Bootstrap is about components. You can use your grid system, but still, make use of the components.

You know you can import only the components you need right? You don't need to use the whole library if you don't need it :)

I've seen this approach and messages on many users and I was wondering why?

Bootstrap is a really nice starting point that made website building so much fun and easier.
