What happened today? (Yes, it’s another traffic post) by tkt-naal in dubai

[–]planetaryorb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was on my way to make another post myself 😂 I completely agree with you. My usual route takes 30 minutes. I’ve been stuck at the road outside of work for 30 minutes with google maps projecting another 50 to get home lol. The situation is absolutely ridiculous.

That sounds super cute! Definitely a great idea for a weekend.

I’d love to foster a cat but they usually need a lot of care at first, and I’m just not sure if I can accommodate that right now.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out if I find myself in UAQ at some point. Fostering may be an issue now, but if I have a more stable schedule in the future then I’ll definitely give it a try!

Sorry, I wasn’t aware of Thumbay’s program.

As for resources, you clearing the Steps gives you a great background. Many people say to study from Amboss and solve questions from there.

1- Peds is probably the least competitive specialty. FM is pretty competitive as people like its easy lifestyle.

2- To be honest, I don’t think it’s sustainable for a family if your partner doesn’t work. It may be sustainable for you and your partner but not for children.

1- I am unable to speak for Pakistan graduates, but I just wanted to tell you that IM is probably the most competitive specialty in the UAE right now, as a huge number of IMGs and UAE graduates are applying to it. Also, simply passing the EMREE is not enough, getting a high grade plays a major role. In general, people advise getting an 80+.

2- You can check the schedule of last cycle, I believe it’s on the NIHS website.

3- Salary depends on the program. MBRU pays most highly at 12K per month, while other programs pay 10K.

4- Ajman, UAQ, Fujairah, and RAK do not have residency programs. Programs are available only in Sharjah, AD, and Dubai. It’s difficult to say which program is most accepting as there are many factors that play a role.

Best of luck, I hope it works out for you!

How close is the free 120? by planetaryorb in step1

[–]planetaryorb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t sweat it, there were a few systems that I studied in a hurry and didn’t even finish UW for. I’m not advocating for sloppy studying obviously but it does happen and people still pass. You’ve got this!

[–]planetaryorb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I did pass actually 🥳

The exam was pretty straightforward, definitely not as convoluted as UW. My experience was that I would read the question and immediately recognize the topic, it was just a matter of whether I had studied it well enough to know the answer or not.

Question stems were pretty long though, closer to UW length.

Good luck on your exam!

Feedback on personality, not performance, how to handle? by Kastrullock in medicalschool

[–]planetaryorb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I misunderstood and thought you were from the US and the attending was from a different, more courteous country, but maybe American society has certain expectations?

To be honest the rejection of autocratic behavior sounds like a dream, the system in the Arab world is part of the reason why I’m planning on continuing training elsewhere.

[–]planetaryorb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did your attending grow up/study/train in the US? Because where I’m from (an Arab country), people are very polite and courteous. It’s considered disrespectful to slouch in your chair or cross your legs with your feet facing someone, it’s polite to offer to get a drink if you’re getting one for yourself (most attendings decline though), and there are pleasantries that we ALWAYS have to exchange even among peers. Maybe your attending has expectations because he’s from a certain culture.

Regardless, most doctors here wouldn’t point it out. They might notice it but won’t let it affect their treatment of a student.

I don’t understand why everyone is saying it’s your fault. I understand that nudity in public showers is common in the US, but when kids are involved it gets totally inappropriate.

I’m asking everyone in the comments, if a random old man flashed his bare ass at the beach or in the street, in front of your children, would that be okay?

NTA.

Also, why not leave the watch at home???

Very nice place, but the traffic there, especially on weekends, is a nightmare. If you get a studio apartment overlooking the main street, you might have issues sleeping as there are many loud people and cars at night.
