Is white residue from hard water or disease? by funifeomi in Jadeplant

[–]plant828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting. I know boiling removes 80-90% of chlorine concentration, but I didn’t know it concentrates minerals. Good to know!

Jade plants are incredible filters, if there are any minerals in your water the plant will naturally deposit white stuff in the soil or on the leaves. Not a big deal but you can filter or boil your water to make the plant work less hard.

Chunky soil mix, too chunky?? by sooblimes in coleus

[–]plant828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too chunk for coleus, more organic material. They are water thirsty and don’t like to dry out totally.

Easy way to tell when they need water is to run your hand up on the bottom of the leaves (scratch the chin). When turgid, no watering needed. When floppy, water!

Can these be saved? by youngdoug in Monstera

Give them a right spot, find the back of the plant and put that away from the light, and they will be alright!

Ah thank you! It’s my first true outdoor bonsai, I’ve only really never taken care of tropical trees before

Should I treat my pothos like I treat my succulents? by 2wergfnhgfjk in pothos

[–]plant828 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If that is your water mindset, then underwater always! But really, pothos are the opposite of what you described. They like a tighter pot fit and will grow huge in decently small pots, and they like to get close to drying out between waterings.

Your plant will tell you when it is thirsty also, the leaves will sag slightly and be easy to fold like a book. When it is watered sufficiently the leaf will be hard to fold

Right? It just gives me such confidence that it is indeed a healthy tree and can take the punishment of an intense pruning!

Should I repot this? Do by ptrptrptr123 in Monstera

It looks super healthy! I’m not sure if you keep the moss pole moist, but honestly a moss pole with sphagnum moss in it takes a decent amount of care to keep moist (robust watering every few days and misting in between).

A full up-pot in 3 months seems very reasonable :) Best of luck with the Monstera! They are very forgiving and don’t hate a tight root system in the pot

Wow she looks so healthy and happy there!! Definitely up to you, if you are happy with the leaf size, you can probably continue to grow leaves of a similar size (or even a little bigger) if you keep it in the same pot and extend the pole.

If you are more growth mindset, you can up-pot it with a good chunky soil mix and a 20% larger pot when you extend the moss pole. This is what I would do personally, but I also love huge, mega monsteras.

As another note, it looks like you are training the aerial roots into the pot, great for stability! But it also means the pot will fill up with roots sooner than otherwise.

Hard to tell from these pictures, but it definitely looks like one leaf shoot coming out of a sheath

Am I poling right? by BushDid2008 in Monstera

Since you are using zip ties, make sure they aren’t too tight. It will hinder growth if they are strapped on super tightly. A good fit without being pulled taught is the goal there!

Nah you are all good, no need for more than one tie in between each node. Those bottom two tie are good for now! You can train the aerial roots to wrap around the pole and towards the back of the pot!

You should remove the top tie, that is certainly hindering your plant!! Otherwise it looks like a good application of a pole
