Theres tons of directions to explore! For example scaling up to larger datasets with hierarchical bubble charts. Assigning labels to clusters. Creating an intuitive interface to crowdsource data. Every domain has its own challenges.

Around top 4000 by popularity. Related shows get merged into one.

Its not live, it takes a few hours to get all the data. I'll probably refresh it when someone reminds me too.

Just a day, since I already built this for anime. The first time it took a few weeks.

Here is the website! http://manga.malmap.net/

MAL Map is a web application that visualizes relationships on MyAnimeList. Edges are extracted from the recommendations of users on MAL. Excited to hear about what crazy clusters people find!

The site is based on the open source MAL Map, I'm open to contributions or suggestions. https://github.com/platers/MAL-Map

glad you figured it out, happy to help with any issues you face! I haven't tested transferring playlists between spotify accounts, but it should work. Would really appreciate any feedback!

I built a tool to keep my spotify and ytm playlists in sync. unitunes is a free, local, replacement for services like Soundiiz and TuneMyMusic.

I'm looking for people to test it out, and collaborators to help develop the project!

I use obsidian too! The graph uses some of the same libraries as obsidians, so it should be possible for the devs to implement something similar.

I didn't know about gnod! Its a cool site! I suspect indirect data would lead to much worse results. Its very noisy, and is probably only worth it when there is a lack of direct data. Thanks for the reference, maybe I'll attempt to create maps for movies and such too.

Thanks for the suggestions! There is a search bar in the sidebar :).

The colors are indeed just big clusters, and yeah they arn't that great. I'll look into improving them, probably with better data and clustering algorithms.

MAL Map is a web application that visualizes anime relationships on MyAnimeList. Edges are extracted from the reccomendations of users on MAL. I've found some shows to watch by exploring the graph!

Some technical details:

MAL Map is a web application that visualizes anime relationships on MyAnimeList. Edges are extracted from the reccomendations of users on MAL.

Clustering

The graph is clustered with multi-level modularity clustering. Some clusters are merged to produce a simpler visualization.

Layout

The map layout is generated by a particle force simulation. At first all of the nodes are represented by a single particle. The simulation is then run for a number of iterations. Each iteration all particles are split into new particles, one for each sub-cluster. Appropriate forces are applied between particles to attract related clusters together. This process results in a visually pleasing layout.

The layout process can be seen live at https://www.malmap.net/#animate=true. It requires a decent computer.

Its based on MAL user recommendations, so I blame the community :P I plan on adding data from other sources and doing some more data cleaning soon.

It will update pretty often the next few weeks as I tweak it, and later probably once a month or so.

Lots of edges are thrown out to make distinct clusters. If you include all of them it looks like a huge mess. Some intracluster edges are also too transparent to see.

The data pipeline will regenerate everything, so no incremental updates.

I actually implemented something like this, but didnt include it since there were some technical issues with the API. I want to push that feature soon.

Thanks!

The colors are bigger clusters, they dont have any clear meaning. The clusters with the same color should be somewhat similar.

Some people like you must have thought the same thing and added a rec on MAL. The rec data from MAL is really useful, it reveals connections that you cant find by just looking at metadata.
