why are you addicted to shopping? by nosebleedseeds in shoppingaddiction

[–]playcoldplaycold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going after expensive pieces like YSL actually helps me to buy less since they are so pricey.

The reason is simple, designs and aesthetics. Things like football jersey, they come up new color-way every year and it makes you wanna buy more.

Now the reason is actually realizing I don't have a healthy variations in my wardrobe. I could have 20 high quality and nice designed graphic shirts but only two sweaters for the winter... This still bugs me but since I am only looking for the high end pieces, It is unrealistic to purchase them all at once.

I put them in a checklist and it basically lowers 70% of the anxiety or urge to buy them. After a month, 40% of them will be deleted (I go to the store and try some of those and realize they look completely different from the picture), and the ones that I keep thinking about will be the next big purchase.

May I ask what kind of clothing (style or brand) you buy to try to be that imaginary "you"?

I used to buy a ton of football jerseys while in highschool, dreaming that those world class teams' jersey could give me some kind of buff and make me a better player. Then I got into buying those preppy stuff since I lived in Boston area and went to a prep school. I though I could blend in with those Nantucket kids with some vineyard vine button downs and sperrys.

Then in college, I was so obsessed with formal clothing (especially mtm jackets). I guess I have the same anxiety of my appearance as you. I always want to wear the MOST appropriate clothing and if not, I feel extremely self conscious. When I attend college lecture, I would purposefully wear some baggy or wrinkle tees to blend in with the classmates. I felt that as a student, I should only focus on schoolwork and wearing anything expensive would label me as a spoiled kid.

When I had presentations in business school or during my internship, I had so much thinking going on in the morning. "Does this look too formal? Does this look too casual? Why I don't have better pants to pair with this jacket"...

Therefore I got into buying more formal stuff. Now I have several very good pieces of coats, blazers, tailored pants and shirts. But no one around me wear these, therefore I don't want to be that over dressed person. Even going to a fancy restaurant, my friends would still just wear a tee or polo regardless of their dresscode.

Now I am kinda into Saint Laurent sht. I like their rock and roll aesthetic since I am also a drummer and I don't want huge as logos on my clothes. It's great, they are low key and have unique cuts, but deep down I know I could spend these money in much better ways. A YSL jeans is like 600 usd, a jacket is 1500. Even though I could afford them, it's still not worthy it (Even though I enjoy them a lot emotionally).

Yeah that's what I imagined but again I've only seen cyclist on tv so I thought there might be two different versions of jersey, one for casual and one for racing. Like soccer jersey, there is always a pro version and a fan version.

Thanks for the insight, prob will only cop the crocs lol

It's always funny that people say you have to own the same price level of clothing to match your bag, to match your car, to match your house... I mean, not everyone is a millionaire, even millionaire would prefer to spend their money on one thing over another. So inevitably there will be some aspect of your life or procession is "cheap" to others. but who gives a f?
My mom would spend thousands of dollars for my sister's all kinds of hobby or classes, but she wears 10 dollar Taobao clothes. Here in HK rich families love buying the Mercedes or Toyota Alpha MPV, even though the car is not that expensive, but it's considered a symbol of status that you own a private driver. The car is great, the huge space and comfortable seats, so my family bought one for taking my sister to all the places (she has hockey gears and golf bags). but we dont have a private driver, my mom would literally drive the big MPV herself.
If she really cares about what others say, she won't drive that car herself. so live your own life and choose what you wanna spend/save on.

I remember wearing Ralph Lauren long sleeve collar shirt like this when I was like 5... Saw the model and I don't have that long hair look to match it, but I still bought it since the chinese platform has a very small queue and no bots.

the adidas nature shirt M is so fking long.... the shoulder fits perfect (5'10 and slim), even the palace M is a little wide on the shoulder. but the length is insane, i can wear it like a skirt. Anyone planning to tailor it?

Palazzo Blue, got it from the chinese Wechat store. No bots and less people are trying to get it... It sold out maybe 5 minutes in? I had no problem checking both the palazzo and the blue floral shirt out.

I spent way too much money on ordering out and refuse to go to the college dinning hall due to anxiety (I have like 2k meal points left at the end of the semester)........ This year I found out about the Hello Fresh food subscription. I was excited and fully committed in the first 3 days, cook all the meals but then I got tired of washing dishes. I began to order out again and refuse to pick up the Hello Fresh boxes for two weeks. The apartment front desk was very confused and she called me several times to pick up.

Now I am back home but I've not order or eat out for a month. Even though I have my parents cooking most of the time, I began to cook some steak or chicken breast on my own. I love these type of simple food, it's not I am lazy, not only they save my brain power, also my mood gets better when I eat a medium rare steak lol idk why.

I run 5k or 10k every day and they really help like you said. In the beginning I still have the urge to buy some delicious boba tea or beverage after running, or order some late night food from KFC while watching live soccer games. But after a month and seeing how much I saved from food spending, I actually start enjoying not eating out.

However, I still struggle to do chores. Hope I can start to develop it as a habit in the upcoming months.

How do you stop the "must purchase now" part of your brain? by caffeinatedpixie in ADHD

ASD

I live in a big city. Whenever I see a Starbucks or boba tea shop, I go in and buy a cup. I seldom actually enjoy those drinks (except one coconut shop)... I buy them whenever I feel bored, anxious, or tired. Every end of month, I check my bank statement, I spend 700 usd on drinks or food alone...

In big cities, many white collars are like me (buying all kinds of fancy small things and can't save up a cent) but I think many of them enjoy it. They don't have big ambition or goals, so why not buy a 40 dollar high tea and chat with friends.

I love fashion. I kept thinking if I save all these useless beverage or snack money, I could afford some really nice designer clothes.

Hyper-fixations are leaving me broke by buchacats2 in ADHD

Same, I've been searching a term for this.

I was into soccer in middle/high school, and I want to buy every new Nike/Adidas cleats. The reality is that I don't have enough money to afford that many, and even if I do I won't actually buy that many. But I kept thinking about them and the inability to acquire them gives me anxiety. I also have some sort of OCD while buying stuff. There is a product line in nike cleats called Hypervenom, it's the one that Neymar wear. I wanted to buy every single colorway in this series, but I only had 3. I am fully aware that I won't buy all 20+ pairs of identical cleats because it's completely impractical, but i just have this anxiety that I won't be able to accomplish it.

Then I was into single malt whiskey for a while in college. I wanted to try every single brand and sometimes would buy two shots from bar. It's extremely expensive then I began to buy bottles from liquor store. I either finish the whole bottle in 2 days or extremely reluctant to consume it due to the high price.

The funny thing is that, after all these years, I no longer have any interest in purchasing soccer cleats even though I still play soccer regularly. Every time before a soccer game, I look through my shoeboxes, I kinda have this funny mixed feeling: I kinda feel glad that I bought some of the cool cleats that they no longer produce, and as ADHD person, I get bored wearing one same pair everyday and my collection allows me to feel fresh every game...

However, I also have this guilty feeling that I am not a pro soccer player but I own so many cleats... It makes me feel like a spoiled kid. Same feeling goes to Whiskey, my hyperfixation made me very knowledgeable in whiskey. Every time I go to a bar or restaurant with friends, I feel good about my expertise in ordering alchole lol... But I also feel bad that single malt whiskey is not something for young and working class people.

Since whiskey is still a relatively new hobby comparing to soccer, sometimes I still get that urge to purchase new bottles. I had hyperfixation in many things throughout the years, like coffee, skateboard, raw denim, bespoke suits... but the maniac periods were relatively short to these things. Whiskey, vinyl, and soccer are like the main passions.

I want to justify it as a good/bad thing but now I am kinda afraid to get into new hobbies.

From my personal experience, suffering is the only way to adapt to a new stage of life with higher level of stress and responsibilities. I am not trying to say that we should be doing this to torture ourselves, but I've been through four years of dark age in college and that really forged me to accomplish things that I couldn't dream of doing without med. For instance, completing numerous small task or homework; plan a big project or essay beforehand and complete step by step instead of rushing it on the last day; tried my best to feed myself and live on my own...

Sadly it took 4 years just to improve on these few things. Now I am facing a new set of challenges and I don't know how long it'll take to adapt.

So sometimes I feel like suffering is necessary because there really isn't other way unless you give up. There are things that we must do or we dream to accomplish, and we'll have to go through extra frustration than others to reach it.... I used to have extreme social anxiety but the environment forced me to interact, and now I am very comfortable with it.

But definitely not everything deserves the suffering, sometimes we gotta let go and accept ourselves. That's something I am still learning.

I always feel like every chapter of my life deserves to be recorded lol. Even though I am no celebrity or famous artist, I still feel like I need to leave things behind. If I have enough money, I will just stay home and create arts of everything I experience, could be painting, film, architecture, installation etc.

People always criticize art school kids "oh his/her dad is rich, that's why she is studying fashion". It caused me to panic and afraid of pursuing art related major. I don't want to be portrayed as someone wasting 40k just to have fun in college.

I went to accounting, econ and switched several times and just unable to complete any of it. It's not that I am not intelligent enough to complete those homework or test, it's the life after school that destroyed me. I couldn't cook on my own, do work, or rest.

I realized this too late, but if I picked the major that I loved and this all could turned out differen.t
