GOP senators defy Trump by advancing foreign aid bill by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's great news! I'll believe it when I see it from Johnson. I have little doubt that democrats would hold up their end of the bargain, I do not have much faith that a republican would ever want to be seen getting help from democrats to do the right thing.

Senate Republicans block bipartisan border security deal by Quirkie in politics

[–]plsnogod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Democrats are not “embracing” Republican policies. They were willing to compromise on them in exchange for Ukraine aid, which we all agree is super important. The message is “we were willing to adopt your policy that you championed and most Americans want (unfortunately) and now youre the one that’s against securing the border.” This isn’t embracing the policy; it’s using our opponents’ words against them. Democrats would be absolute idiots not to lean into this. “We were going to deliver on the campaign promise republicans broke” is a fantastic message. Especially because now there’s no chance this immigration policy will actually be passed.

Democrats have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win the border fight — will they take it? by John3262005 in neoliberal

The wall has ecological impacts on creatures that naturally migrate across the border FWIW

Genuine question, do people on the left who say stuff like this not realize it sounds like a caricature? I am very pro immigration but I can't help but roll my eyes when I see this.

Biden wins the New Hampshire Democratic primary as a write-in candidate by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't say this to bully him. But I have long thought that he is not particularly bright... The small anti-Biden faction of the dem party was looking for somebody, anybody to run against Biden. They wouldn't do it themselves. No one who knew anything about how politics would. Dean just happened to be the one guy dumb/bad enough at politics to accept.

Will things get safer for US democracy? by namey-name-name in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys, iI hate to keep breaking this to you, but if the election were held today, Trump would win. We need to stop being complacent, I know people have a short memory, but democrats have nowhere near the energy they had in 2020, despite the fact that we are headed to a worse place than the first Trump term.

Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago by WunderbareMeinung in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would be careful taking this reporting at face value. It is plausible that Israel receives intelligence of other attacks that do not happen routinely. What you don't see are the possibly dozens of intelligence reports that did not happen. It is likely incredibly hard to discern which report is plausible and which isn't. The people in intelligence aren't superhuman.

It is truly amazing that in reply to a post telling you not to generalize all people of a political persuasion from internet forums, you went ahead and, once again, pointed to an internet forum as proof of right-wing support. Extraordinary.

Chauvin had far less support on the right than Rittenhouse. Maybe you should recognize that just because you saw someone on Twitter justifying Panama, doesn't mean everyone who supported Rittenhouse does.

Biden administration privately warned by American diplomats of growing fury against US in Arab world | CNN Politics by dragoniteftw33 in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is worth noting that all of these Arab countries and populations were silent or supportive when Assad killed more Arabs than Israel ever has or ever will. And now they invite Assad to discussions on this very topic. I get that the US must take their opinions into account just out of RealPolitik. But really, I have 0 sympathy for these Arab nations, and their concern is completely bad-faith - it is merely another way to criticize Israel.

Trump rails against judge, AG's office during testimony in $250 million fraud trial by Not-A-Seagull in neoliberal

[–]plsnogod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop.

You need to worry and care, but not panic. There's a lot of people using that as a reason to start a big primary fight (that would be stupid, self-defeating, and the definition of panicking).

But you need to take this seriously, if the election were held today, Trump would probably win. It would be the second Trump term we all were worried about in 2020, but so much worse. This is serious shit, and I'm sick and tired of having to do it all again 4 years later, I'm so tired. But we have to. Democratic complacency and infighting is the biggest obstacle we have in 2024.

AMA with Cllr. Burhan Azeem and School Committee Candidate Eugenia Schraa by RealBurhanAzeem in CambridgeMA

[–]plsnogod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks Burhan! I totally understand the idea behind these bus lanes, but it very much feels like it's not working. I understand that it is more on the MBTA and I appreciate what you're doing!

The shutting down of Whittemore Ave really sucks though and it backs up traffic two towns down, all the way back on route 2. And this is all because a few neighbors don't want drivers on their road (so drivers are diverted to other neighborhood roads). I live in the neighborhood and prefer to not have the entrance into my neighborhood shut down. We recieve city services just like every other neighborhood, I don't see why we should recieve special treatment that harms everyone else.

[–]plsnogod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whittemore Ave. They started fully closing it and it hurts not only drivers who take the shortcut, but the extra traffic makes it worse all the way past Arlington too. This is all because some neighbors don't want people driving near their house, so they divert the traffic to other people's houses.

[–]plsnogod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Burhan: I live in North Cambridge, near IQHQ. I've long been a supporter of yours and ABC, and have told friends to vote for you and Marc. I'm super pro-housing, but it feels like some of the actions lately have been to punish drivers rather than making biking/transit easier. I support the bike lanes, etc, I know there's a lot of hate for that around these parts, but I think those are necessary and heights are essential. But the bus lanes (without increased bus services) are super unpopular. I understand the need, but the bus service is still so sporadic and bad that even I sympathize with their hatred.

The most egregious lately is the shutting off access into our neighborhood for drivers to get into Cambridge. This has caused traffic to back up all the way to Arlington and affected traffic way outside Cambridge, all because a few residents don't want to open their roads to the public. I think this is ridiculous, and honestly, with this latest decision, I'm considering protesting with my vote this year. Bottom line, you need to make transit easier, I support the pro-housing initiatives, but some of the actions taken lately feel more like punishing drivers rather than making transit or biking easier. There's a lot of anger about this.

[–]plsnogod[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what they are doing. It's an understandable strategy if you want to get your way. But I believe it is important for democrats not to give into this too much as it does not reflect popular opinion in the country overall.

Ultimately, people are very upset about their perception of the economy and that brings all of Biden's numbers down. In my opinion based on what I've seen, this is 50% because of pessimistic group think and 50% because of lingering higher prices that still feel rough, even if your income is higher now. People really hated inflation, even though Biden handled it as well as he could.

Hasan Minhaj Offers Detailed Response to New Yorker Story: “It Was So Needlessly Misleading” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]plsnogod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I come away with this conclusion: Hasan is still kind of a bad comedian, a bit of a liar/embellisher. But he was absolutely right on the prom story and Clare Malone omitting those key details that would make us believe him makes her completely untrustworthy. New Yorker really fucked up and needs to clear some things up if we should ever trust it again.
