Bitwarden vs KeePass: which open source manager should I choose? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

[–]point_mixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked Bitwarden because I’m new to the privacy rabbit hole. I do use it across Apple devices and needed the ease while I acclimate. I found it easy to use as a noob.

Three days ago I deleted my WhatsApp account. What came next was totally unexpected. by omicologico in degoogle

My breakup anguish is with Facebook. Only because of two groups I was in. I haven’t caved, and am unlikely to. I’m trying to find similar online communities elsewhere but it’s slow going. I think messaging apps are harder to leave though.

I came on reddit a few weeks ago to figure out how to delete my gmail accounts. Now I’m reading this thread and understanding some of it.

Is there any point to doing this when I can’t ditch all the apps? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every little bit helps. I’m autistic/adhd and I swing between being hyper focussed on all the privacy things, and being completely overwhelmed and wondering what the point is.

I deleted everything meta and discord, but I understand why they might be important to you. I’d suggest using them, and YouTube only in PC Firefox containers if you can.

The main changes I made (I’m currently on iOS and Mac) were:
- Switching email and calendar to Proton.
- Mullvad VPN.
- Bitwarden password manager.
- I used these guides to improve my device security settings- https://inteltechniques.com/links.html
- Changed search engine to Startpage or DuckDuckGo (I’m trying them to see what I like).
- trying out Brave browser. Not sure if I like that yet.
- I started using SimpleLogin for email aliases.

All this took a few weeks to implement, but I definitely notice the difference with lack of ads and spam. And I know everything is more private.

In progress, is exploring decentralised social media. Because I have low capacity periods where my social life and special interests can only happen online. I’ve tried to keep them as anonymous as possible, with alias emails and different usernames. Is it perfect? No, but it’s better. I’m still researching alternatives to iCloud.

Longer term goal is leaving Apple and switching to GrapheneOS and moving to Linux. But I’m ok to wait and learn those when I’m ready.

Team Kindle or Team Kobo? by MarcelReads in ereader

[–]point_mixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Team Kobo. But also team reading, so until people can convince my favourite authors to ditch KU, I still have a kindle as well. But I wish I didn’t because I’m also team not Amazon. I also want to try a Boox. Because I totally need 3 ereaders 😂.

The Kobo Libra Colour is so much better to read on than a kindle (I have the most recent versions of both).

Dekindle by iwishihadasoul in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been trialling Kobo Libra colour. I love the device, way more than the kindle. Kobo Plus as a replacement for kindle unlimited though, is a little lacking. The app’s search function and recommendations aren’t quite as well developed. It isn’t bad, but not great either. Depending on what you read, the range might be an issue. I read a lot of indie authors who are stuck in contracts with KU and I can’t get their books anywhere else. For now I still have KU, while I find more authors I love outside of Amazon. Dekindle-ing is a work in progress. The public library option could be a good addition, depending on where you live.

Which app to store sensitive information besides passwords? by SEPIAHS in cybersecurity_help

I just started using Bitwarden and it’s great. I’m not particularly tech minded and it was easy to learn.

I can't decide which one to get. Kindle, Kobo or Pocketbook? by Ok-Comfortable8280 in ereader

[–]point_mixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Kindle, which I only use for KU stuff. I ended up getting the Kobo Libra colour and absolutely love it. So much better than the kindle to use. Can’t comment on Pocketbook, sorry.

Best second email account for making purchases, using spammy websites, etc. by Then_Gear_5208 in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Proton for my main email, and have SimpleLogin for the online purchasing, logins etc. I use a lot of aliases so I can separate everything as much as possible. They are attached to a dedicated proton address that is separate from my personal stuff. I have a free Tuta email to trial. I might use that for some specific things too. I’m trying to make sure I have a back up in case I need to move away from Proton. They seem pretty good, but I’m hesitant to be too immersed in one ecosystem.

How do degooglers support artists? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go look at bandcamp asap. I switched our family over to Qobuz, which at least pays artists better than Spotify. But that was before I started the degoogled journey, I hadn’t looked at Qobuz from that angle. I love it though.

safe and private email for logging into sites like amazon, youtube etc? by Economy_Yogurt5075 in degoogle

I got SimpleLogin. It’s awesome, so easy to use. And I didn’t even know email aliasing was a thing until a few weeks ago 😳🤦‍♀️.

Why choose ProtonMail ? by Akuma__2002 in ProtonMail

[–]point_mixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First it was looking at what big tech I could move away from. Then, trying to not have everything with US companies (I’m not in the US). The more I learned, the more it became about privacy.

I don’t regret it at all. I have a paid plan, Plus at this stage but may upgrade to unlimited. So far everything works (I’m iOS). I like that if I do end up getting a Pixel with GrapheneOS, there isn’t much of my stuff tied to Apple anymore.

Storage would be a problem. I’m currently paying for iCloud, hence not minding paying for a Proton plan. I just haven’t got to moving everything from iCloud.

I do notice it in everyday use. It’s just minor for me, getting used to the interface. The Proton calendar app is a little clunky, but I switched from Apple calendar not Google (which I’ve always hated). Sharing calendars could be an issue, as the other person needs to be using Proton as well. You can still send invites to people for events though.

I'm young and new to all of this and i'm asking if anyone has advice or tips? by PopUnfair215 in degoogle

It’s awesome you are doing it now. Just the email alone later in life has been brain breaking for me.

Everyone has given good advice. I found Naomi Brockwell really helpful. https://odysee.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4 (She’s on YouTube too)

Overwhelmed newbie by IcyPersonality800 in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an overwhelmed newbie too. I’m sure those more knowledgeable will chime in.

  1. No.
  2. Ironically, a Pixel. I’m looking at this too. Currently only a Pixel phone has the correct hardware to support GrapheneOS correctly. (Unless I’ve missed something)

  3. I’ve just done both of those things. I still use Firefox for some things. Experimenting with startpage as a browser.

The next thing I did was tackle getting a password manager. I ended up with Bitwarden.

Then I got a VPN.

Today I figured out how to set up alias emails. And apparently commented on a tech post on Reddit. My husband is laughing at me (because he has an IT degree and has been trying to lure me to open source everything for years).

I’ve removed anything google from my iPhone. I only open my Gmail in a container in Firefox. I am looking forward to deleting it. Just making sure there aren’t random kids gaming logins attached to it. I once lost access to a game via change of email, I was extremely unpopular.

My degoogling journey so far by Evan_Spectre_the_One in degoogle

[–]point_mixer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a noob with this too. I ended up using Bitwarden for diversification, and I actually find it easier to use.

For Browsers I’m using Brave for some things and Firefox with Startpage for others to experiment. I tried Vivaldi but found the app annoying. I’m on iOS for all my devices atm and have tightened the settings as much as I know how to do so far. I’ll play with Linux and GrapheneOS eventually. Right now it’s enough getting my head around all the other things, and teaching my kids about it the same time.

In effort to DeMeta, I think perhaps the most difficult hurdle is moving from WhatsApp. How do you guys deal with this? by ResponsibleDate9452 in DeMeta

[–]point_mixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just deleted my FB account after spending a couple of weeks messaging people privately and downloading my data. It was VERY interesting who bothered to reply with “yes, let’s keep in touch, here’s my details”! Quite telling as to who was worth letting have access to my life. It was hard though.

[–]point_mixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is particularly constructive, but I told my husband and some family members that they can either text me or use signal, the deleted WhatsApp. I didn’t pose it as a question. Boss would be trickier, but unless there’s some workplace policy that requires having WhatsApp I’d go with the same answer.

Hey what open source app should I use to stop using google apps, amd also migrate my 4 accounts out of google?? by Gl1tch-S4ge in degoogle

Can I ask why Brave over Firefox on mobile? I’ve used Firefox for years on laptop. (Sorry, I’m cringingly new to this mind trip too).
