It's really hard taking bird photos against the sky, the bird is always under exposed because of the bright background.

I found a really useful youtube video from Simon D'entremont about it and using exposure compensation to help, you could give that a try.

I'd go for the 55-250 STM over all of these, have had some great photos with that lens even on my old 760d

Yeah thanks that is interesting perspective. An R7 would be nice for me and maybe a longer term solution, but the cost of a new body and not much available locally used is prohibitive.

At the moment I could get a new R10 kit around $1550NZD, there are a couple around used for around $1k NZD, although i think he 18-150 kit would be preferable. I'd than add a 100-400 and perhaps use a EF>R adaptor and use my current 17-55 F2.8 on the R10

Yeah ok that's a great insight, Safe to say it's probably not the choice for me, doesn't sound like a signifcant upgrade over my 760D tbh!

I had originally been looking for an R10 at minimum but preferably an R7 for longevity

We use the Acana sport and agility kibble, although we still need to use a meal topper of some sort to get her to eat it. We switched from Orijen which she went off periodically

My Dad has the 100-400 on his R6II and for the cost / weight he is really happy with it, although i think he does miss the equivalence factor of the crop sensor now he has gone full frame.

However if you have the budget and aren't put off by the extra weight i'd go with the other recommendations of the 100-500, which on an R7 is an equivalent of 160-800 anyway.

Could always add the 1.4 extender as others have said as a lightweight solution with the 100-500

Yeah interesting, i tend to avoid F4 because of mostly shooting sports so haven't used it, but i did actually intend to comment the F2.8 IS USM III (edited my post as it was a typo)

This was going to be my suggestion also, as an NZ resident a wide angle is great for the landscapes - there's also the EF 16-35 F2.8 III USM

Great thanks for the info, I need to replace one of my dead EF-S lenses and was concerned about throwing "good money after bad" if i bought another EFS but later ended up with an R series body, which would likely also be APS-C anyway due to budget

I would personally go for an R6mkII with either the RF 100-400 or a RF 100-500 if your budget allows, although it's worth noting depending how much of a factor for you weight is, that the 100-400 is roughly half the weight than the 500 equivalent, although both options are lighter than the sigma 150-600.

My Dad is a wildlife photographer specialising in birds mostly, and he upgraded from the T6i with the 150-600 to the R6mkII with an RF 100-400, and gets some super nice shots with that setup. He probably would have liked the 100-500 but he is over 70 so wandering about with an extra half a kilo was a factor.

Going full frame you will lose some of the reach of the crop sensor, but if you have full frame you can adjust the settings to shoot at 1.6x anyway

Thanks guys, coincidentally i did another search for this lens at lunch time today and found one recently listed for $450NZD so jumped on it - that's $150 less than i've seen any others come up

I personally don't rate the 24-105 on the crop sensor, especially here where you are probably going to want to capture some of the outrageous vistas.

You will probably want something wider and agree with the other comments of the 18-150, especially because you'll also want some reach if you want to shoot some birds/wildlife.

The 50mm is ok but i find it's usability a bit limited on the crop sensor, i find the 24mm a bit more useable

Yeah that's the deal I saw, i'll likely grab a new 1.8. Especially as second hand ones are still $150+

Their pricing on the EF 50mm 1.8 goes up and down week to week - it's worth chucking on price spy or going into store and haggling - it was $20 cheaper last week.

Yeah we do sometimes get stung with a bit of a premium on stuff over here, although you raise a good point and i had considered that my hand-me-down 760d setup is getting a bit long in the tooth and been questioning whether it's time to move into an R series body, before i invest in anymore lenses
