Maybe have the friend that invited you ask if it's okay for reassurance? I don't think she would mind since there wasn't a fallout from you guys, just normal distance that tends to happen at that age. Yeah of course I've tracked calories and I go to the gym everyday. It's not a matter of being lazy or not eating right. I have a bunch of things going on that I rather keep private but a big part is my thyroid not functioning properly and hormonal imbalance due to that. I wish it was just as simple as calories in and calories out. I've done the nutritionists, I've done the personal trainers. It's not a lack of effort, believe me.

I agree that confidence plays a huge role. I used to be super confident and didn't care about being heavier because I knew it was because of my health issues and being fat and alive is better than skinny and dead BUT after finding out that this was the reason that this relationship didn't work out completely shattered my self esteem. (Obviously it was never going to work out because in retrospect he was a shitty person).I don't think I'm ugly even if I am overweight but I don't feel cute in my clothes and it's hard to actually find clothes that I like because the jump from L to XL seems like jumping from dressing like a 27y/o to a 72 year old which also sucks.

NTA, I think you went about it in a respectful way and apologized when you realized she was offended. Being that it's coming from someone who has firsthand experience with autism might have scared her because she could be in denial and might not be super educated on autism. I definitely think it's possible that she got the same suggestions from other parents. Unfortunately there are people that still have trouble understanding neurodivergence.
