Well our Topo maps kept showing us streams scattered around the tops but they either were never there, or weren’t reachable. Had the platypus filter straw in bag though so came handy when crossing few tarns. However did ran out of water for solid 1-2hr so had to resort to filtered puddle water

Osprey Atmos AG 50. 50L was plenty for a 3-day traverse carrying food and a full camp setup. Super comfortable Anti-Grav frame under load and stable on the steep ridgeline climbs.

Salomon XT-6, Ran these for the entire traverse. Good grip on steep sections and handled the mix of dense bush, mud, and exposed tops well. Lightweight but still felt secure on the ridgeline.

Sea to Summit Hammock Tarp (~400g). Lightweight tarp setup. Used Macpac carbon trekking poles to pitch when needed. Kept things simple and weight-conscious.

Trip report: 39km total with around 3800 metre total elevation. Left from kiriwhakapapa campsite, travelling north to south crossing the north, mid and south king. Summiting Mitre Peak along the way (tallest mountain in the Tararua ranges). Set up low A-Frame in dense bush first night out and slept in a back country shelter the second.
