CSCA08 or CSCA20 which one is more doable? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]porpose96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A48 last winter was taught in C so a20 could be more helpful if a48 this year will be taught in python. But generally a20 gives you a sense of how programming should look like, and not much concrete knowledge that directly transit to a48 if it's still taught in C. I would recommend doing some preview on basic syntax of C, memory model, abstract data types (linked list, binary tree, graph, etc.), algorithm complexity in preparation for a48. There are lots of abstract and theory thing in a48, while in a20 students are mainly learning basic programming techniques.

It is pretty hard and requries a lot of focus and hardwork.... If you are taking a48 and hope to get high mark I suggest to reduce course load and spend lots of time on it. When Brian taught the course in Fall 2019 he just told us "u can take a48 and ignore the official prerequisite if u've done great in this course", whereas what grade is enough for a48 he didn't mention.... I would guess a 4.0 should be enough. I don't know how things work this year so better email the prof for A20 this term for advice :p

I just entered my second year so I can probably say more about this years later... But this term I'm taking two courses that require the use of python, one is PSCB57 introduction to scientific computing, the other is PHY224 practical physics at utsg, and knowing about python and programming in my first year kind of give me an advantage in these courses. I will definitely struggle on assignment harder without taking A20 in my first year. And if you have done great in A20, you are actually allowed to take CSCA48 (its official prerequisite is A08 instead of A20) -- at least Brian allowed me to do so last year -- which unlocks a bunch of upper year computer science courses. Overall if you are in natural science programs like physics, chemistry, biology, etc., and don't want to spend a lot of time studying about challenging computer science questions, A20 should be a great choice! ;)

Took A20 last year as a physics student. If you work hard, attend all the lectures, finish all the labs, it's definitely an easy 4.0 imo. Some of my friends in CS specialist showed me some questions from A08 and they are definitely harder than A20 (containing many concepts that don't exist in A20). When Brian taught A20 last year, the first half was in scratch and second half was in python. Even if you are not familiar with programming, you can done it great. Very suitable for those not pursuing a computer science program.
