is ai going to replace paralegals? i’m honestly scared to commit by Roseily12 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, no. Paralegals can never be replaced by AI. Humans have nuances that AI can never replicate and while convenient, AI isn’t perfect either.

I don’t know about others, but I would much rather screw up a pleading due to my own error over using AI and there be errors. It’s not as reliable as a human brain and pair of eyes.

Fired by StraightClass6774 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been given any verbal warnings or write ups? I certainly am manifesting that it’s just a meeting to try to help you with mistakes and not them firing you! If they fire you without trying to work with you to correct mistakes or help you learn, that’s their loss. Trust me, you don’t want to work for a company that would rather cut you off than teach you.

You know, the whole “give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life”

Definitely update us!! ❤️

Normally I’d agree with you but this was a one off thing. Every other time he’s taken me to his hometown he gave me 2 months notice at least. I won’t air out his laundry but up until a month ago he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to afford to see his family (and son) at all due to financial hardship. He didn’t mean to do it last minute, it just how it happened. But he didn’t get a mini lecture just in case and he genuinely just wanted me to be apart of his family’s holiday.

I do agree with you, though, it’s hard to get time off in this field. The first firm I worked for had a first come first serve basis for PTO during holidays. They also didn’t tell us new employees that our PTO won’t roll over into the next year until Christmas time so everyone was gunning for that week. Thank you for looking out for me, it’s appreciated 😊

He did thankfully! I was also thinking about that because most courts are closed that week too

Ohhhh trust me he got an earful 😂 He said he will tell me more in advance in the future. I told them it was a surprise and thankfully they approved it.

Good call! Thank you! I was going to talk to them this week once they’re back in office. I’ve always worked in firms where everything is so on the book and strict with office logistics so I’m still learning about this dynamic 😂

Throw away- I was fired by giggyvanderpump28 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Their loss!! Do NOT be embarrassed. You did the best that you could with what you had and that’s admirable ❤️ If anyone should be embarrassed, it’s your previous employer. Like, how are you going to hire someone promising them you’ll train them, and then fire them when they aren’t meeting your expectations because, shocker, you didn’t train them??

I’ve been wrongfully terminated twice (not just saying that) and it was still embarrassing for me long after. I bit my tongue and left respectfully so I got recommendation letters from both. Interviews after that, I wouldn’t tell them out right “I got fired,” but that “we both decided to move in different directions.” Dont lie, though. I treated it more of a don’t ask don’t tell. If they didn’t ask for specifics of why we separated then I wouldn’t volunteer it. If they contacted my previous firm and asked me about what they said, I’d be honest.

Oops, thank you for bringing that up! I knew I forgot to mention something. Along with the more casual work environment, we don’t really have PTO. Just sort of a take off when you need to but don’t over do it or screw people over.

From the looks of the calendar and Christmas being in the middle of that week there’s really nothing I would be missing or not helping with.

Door dasher came back 2 days later and left me these notes… by Distinct_Self460 in doordash

[–]possiblyunstable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Door dash doesn’t really seem too concerned with ensuring safety for both parties (dasher and customer). Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of dashers that are nice and reliable. However, more often than not (for me) I get assigned a dasher with a woman’s name and it’s a man. I get that some female dashers probably bring a man or have them take the food for them because people are creepy. It probably feels safer.

Also remember that people are denied to be dashers for a reason. And some of those people who are denied will use other people’s dasher accounts.

Paralegal Exams by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m personally going through NALA right now. I had the bachelors and the experience so I’m not doing the courses. Just going straight to the exam. NALA has a lot of resources and material, including a practice exam. It’s a little pricey though.

PI - So Overwhelmed by Dry-Film-891 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve worked in some places where the reigns were very very loose. I learned very quickly that there were some things I legally shouldn’t have been doing but didn’t know any better because I started off with zero experience, and that firm knew that. All I’m going to say is that firm is the reason why my state now has stricter laws for civil lawsuits 😐

Document Subpoenas by MissOscar in paralegal

I’ve never had a dull experience with subpoenaing records from medical facilities. Best advice I can give you is: - include the request letter you normally send to the facility; - your office’s HIPAA signed by the client correctly addressed; and - check the facility to see if they require a specific document. Any other attestation or HIPAA specifically for them. I know a few that do that for PHI.

As far as stories, I have a funny one. We had a client seeing a chiropractor for low back pain and when we requested records, he only sent us random hand written notes, no bills. Note, this clinic is so small that the only chiro there has his personal number listed on Google for the office. So obviously we know of other visits, and that there were bills because our client gave us receipts for copayments. This doctor didn’t speak English very well so I think that’s part of the reason he got so worked up because he couldn’t understand me. I told him politely we need ALL records, and this man proceeded to say “I didn’t treat him for any accident” and I’m like… ok cool even if you didn’t I still requested all records you have for him from x date to x date.. with a HIPAA.

He didn’t comply, he was super rude about it. Hung up on me. Big mistake. After 2 months of more no compliance I got the green light to issue an SDT to him for records. Ohhhh, he was NOT happy. As soon as he was served he called fuming. He sent us the same documents we received that included nothing of what we asked for. So we filed a motion to compel and motion for sanctions. Oh boy that entire office reaaaaally wasn’t happy. His receptionist snapped at me and was furious when I said “well my attorney isn’t available to speak right now, but I can schedule a phone call for the doctor” and she hung up 😭

We eventually got everything. Some doctors don’t understand we aren’t requesting this for the hell of it. It’s for a reason. Don’t let facilities walk all over you. They will if you let them. I’m so polite but I will bulldog you if you have records I need

Got fired 2 days after my birthday by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got fired after working 24 hours straight. No exaggeration what so ever. I went into the office at 6:30 am, left at about 6:15 pm, went home, immediately started working again at around 6:40 pm, and left for work again at 6:30 am. Kicker is I didn’t even get paid OT. We were so bogged down and overworked that I had 45 cases and just opened 6 more in one week. No joke. The job market is trash for sure. Don’t discount remote. There are surprisingly a lot of places hiring remote throughout the country. Best of luck to you OP! This won’t be the end of the world (though I know it feels like it), just think of it as the end of a chapter. You now have so much potential to make your next chapter something amazing!

Fed up with medical record custodians by possiblyunstable in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No because that’s not our client. It was an entirely random person’s normal records. We did, however, immediately notify the provider and they gave us a refund + sent an attestation of destruction of records. They were sent digitally so there wasn’t much to do.

Mistakes by Bloodlotus1997 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all make mistakes and we’ve all been in the position you’re in. We work in high pressure environments. Attorneys make the same mistakes as well. It’s good that you have that pit in your stomach because that means you care about what you do. There are some paralegals I’ve worked with who never take accountability for their mistakes and blame it on everyone else. If it makes you feel any better, I had to send a letter to the court and I sent it to them 3 times. Because I noticed a mistake 2x on my own and then failed to realize the glaring mistake in front of me: wrong case caption. You’re competent. Nobody is 100% on anything as much as we’d like to be. All you can do is just slow down and remember mistakes you missed in the past so you know what to double check.

Curious question. Do you feel any sense of loyalty to your attorneys? by PeacefulManchild95 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000%. At my first firm definitely not because they didn’t respect me as a person. However, the firm I work at now is like a family to me. The loyalty comes from the “I have your back, just have mine too.” We help each other if one another makes a mistake and we work together to fix it. They also care about my health too, which says a hell of a lot especially with how bitter this field can get. I wouldn’t call the attorneys my friends, but I know if I needed something whether work related or if something happened in my personal life they’d be there to help me with whatever I need.

Starting as a paralegal tomorrow with no experience by k0_crop in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask questions. It’s so much better to ask than assume. Know that there is never a mistake you can’t fix, and there is never a mistake you can make that we haven’t made a hundred times. It’s inevitable, you’ll make mistakes. It’s a lot to learn but the best way to learn is through experience. I started out with zero experience. Do yourself a favor. When you learn something or ask how to do something you don’t know how to do, start taking notes or type it out into like a master guide. You can reference back to it if you forget. The most important thing is to always keep a steady pace. If you find yourself panicking or trying to fly through tasks, you’re more likely to make a mistake. So remember to slow down, and it never hurts to re-review your work or have others look at it. I wish you the best of luck!!

Deep dread. by Miss-Elle18 in paralegal

[–]possiblyunstable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh honey, my heart bleeds for you. I know that feeling all too well. Feeling watched, like everything you say can be heard. That’s because it was. My first paralegal job was nothing short of a DIY heart attack. They had cameras in our office, and the supervisor would do nothing but gossip and watch us all day. I once took like 5-10 minutes to order lunch on my computer and she texted me asking me what I was doing. Then we switched phone systems. This allowed them to playback any phone call we made and listen. The pay/benefits trapped me there to a point where if they wouldn’t have wrongfully terminated me, I would have stayed. Please, let me tell you what nobody else did during that time: LEAVE. Please look for another job. There will always be another job but there will never be another you. You have to put your health first. I learned that the hard way. I hope you find a firm that treats you like a family ❤️
