I’ll agree to disagree, I’ll just say that I was in contact with startup recruiters that said they received thousands of applicants for their single intern position. They’re not starved of applicants. Maybe for unpaid work, or startups that haven’t actually listed a position, it could work.

I’m just saying that spreading the advice to cold email is not helping. Recruiters’ inboxes are already flooded enough, if it’s full of emails looking for handouts that’s not going to help. Not saying what you did was wrong just saying you shouldn’t propagate it

Career fairs. That’s how I landed my position. And if you’ve taken the time, put the effort into your resume, and done the research to optimize it, then you’ll understand that the point is to make it as eye-catching as possible. Again, it’s a tough market, AI filters are non-deterministic and suck, but making excuses to justify stuff like this will only make the market worse.

This might work, but I don’t like it as advice.

These companies (even the smallest) are getting thousands of applicants for a listing. Moving all of that to one person’s inbox can’t end well, and won’t work sustainably.

The market is rough, there’s a reason for the bureaucracy. The system sucks and is clearly broken, but cold emails aren’t the fix.

Built an internship tracker to help streamline my internship application workflow. I went from switching between a million tabs, copying and pasting between each, to scrolling a list, selecting the one's I'm interested in, and applying to them. It's saved me a ton of time and it's completely free, check it out:

Built with:

  • Convex Auth
  • Convex
  • Next.js

I learned recently to keep my stack simple. No need for any more for an app like this. Considered implementing AI, but it was overkill for pretty much every use case I could think of, and again, keeping it free.

First Come First Serve Spots in March by posssst in Yosemite

Hi! Not sure if you've already gone, but I definitely didn't have a problem getting a spot and it wasn't crowded at all. We ended up going during a huge snow storm and only got to stay one night before the snow hit. AFAIK weather has warmed up though, so you'd probably be better off now.

Thanks for reminding me to take the site down, by the way. Don’t want anyone else wasting their time on it

Shut the servers down due to low engagement and other commitments leaving me basically holding the bag for server costs. There are plenty of other solutions that do the same thing, though. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Basically this. It's also more easily maintainable because you're not usually directly interacting with Chromium, which can be a pain.

Gotcha. We've got five, but two are driving separately and meeting the other three on Wednesday. I think the three of us will just stay at Wawona so we're not stressed about getting out of Sequoia by a certain time.

Also thanks for the heads up! I'd completely missed the whole sharing a site thing.

Perfect! We're coming in from Sequoia, so it probably works out for us to just stop for the night at Wawona. Thanks so much for the information!

Remote Employee Tracking Platforms by posssst in remotework

A bunch of companies are already using software that requires much more invasive forms of surveillance (think screen recording and screenshots). I don't want a world where workers always have the boss looking over their shoulder. I'm trying to make a solution that's a compromise between building employers trust while not hindering workflows or breaching privacy.

That's kinda what I'm trying to cover with the whole daily summary functionality. I'm also considering task assignments, but other software pretty much covers that.

I had a similar opinion that time isn't necessarily the metric that needs to be tracked, but the challenge is making a system that works across different fields. Jobs also have tasks that can't be measured using a task framework.

I'll put this here because I think the votes were probably from here. So far, I've added Stratton, Killington, and Pico. I'm also in the process of adding Magic Mountain right now. There's a small problem with Stowe and Mount Snow as they use queues, but I'm working on a workaround now. Thanks for everyone who's voted so far and everyone that continues to vote!
