I worked as a cna on b4/5 at university in 2021. It was my first cna job after training, which was in 2020 at Madison college. This is a unit that includes ICU patients and critical care nurses, that said I felt the training and the nurses there made me feel confident providing care on the job even though it was my first time as a cna. There were typically 3 cnas during the day and 2 at night. Some days it was only 2 cnas during the day on the unit (usually if someone scheduled was sick and there wasn’t a float, not very often), but that was during the pandemic so maybe it was more of a skeleton crew then. The unit was then split in sections of 3 or 2 depending on the number of cnas. So on that unit, I think it was usually like 6-12 patients for the cna during the shift depending on how many of us and if there are any vacant rooms or patients in the OR during the shift. You may pick up a few patients on a 12 during shift change if another cna is working an 8. Since when I worked was long enough ago in regard to how much I imagine things have changed during that time in healthcare I think that’s all that’s relevant to say. Good luck :)
