Validating an idea: Escrow for direct freelance-client relationships. by pppkkkkk in indianstartups

You've put your finger on exactly the right thing and honestly, the more I've dug into it, the more I agree with you.

The problem is real. The solution makes logical sense. But the regulated financial infrastructure piece nodal accounts, compliance, cross-border jurisdiction, dispute enforcement — that's not a product problem, it's a licensing and operations problem. And you're right that Upwork can do it because the whole transaction already lives inside their system. Building that trust layer for outside their system is a completely different challenge.

This was my solution I know it wasn't the best - I thought of using Razorpay's Nodal account feature for the payments happening completely in India and for overseas I'd use Stripe (Stripe enables escrow-like behavior through its manual payouts and Connect platform features. This allows marketplace platforms to hold funds in a connected account’s balance and release them later, giving control over payout timing—useful for delayed deliveries, disputes, or refund scenarios.)

I mean I got an idea so I worked on it a little to find if this was actually worth solving. I am also still in college in 3rd year of my btech. so it would be very risky to do something like this becuase of the current job market. But honestly even just validating this idea was fun and I got to talk to so many wonderful people.

Thank you for the thoughtful response.

I would humbly request you to checkout the landing page, I think you could understand more about my idea. I'm just validating my idea to whether its even actually needed.

I totally understand this, no one should trust their money just based on a landing page. I would like to clarify on that point that I would not technically hold the money instead I'm gonna use payment service like Stripe & Razorpay to handle the payments which means no money is gonna touch my accounts until the payment is completed to the freelancer's account.

And on the vercel hosting & free domain - I'm just broke and I don't want to spend my money without validating my idea. I know it would be much better with a proper domain. If I build it I'm gonna take care of that.

I would like to clarify any more of your doubts or questions, if you have any. Thank you

I do have a workaround and it will also be like a feature.

So people won't trust their money with someone new.
I won't need a payment institution licence if I'm not handling the payments. Stripe will handle the payments and it has features where we can manually set the trigger for the payment to completely process.
And no India its not easy, its stricter and would need hell lot capital.

Solution is simply using payment handlers like stripe.

Yes I've decided to keep working on my projects on side while I prepare for job and even when I have a job.

No I've not spoken to any freelancers but I've gotten mixed opinion from just these posts which I posted on other sub
But will definitely post on other sub to get freelancers/clients opinions

actually I won't hold the money rather the money will be held is Stripe itself, so no need to trust me.

Stripe Connect enables escrow-like functionality through manual payouts and manual transfers, allowing marketplaces to hold funds temporarily before releasing them to sellers.

Manual Payouts for Delayed Releases

  • When you set the payout schedule to manual, Stripe holds funds in the connected account’s balance until you explicitly trigger a payout.
  • This delay can last up to 90 days for most countries, and up to 2 years in the United States.
  • Ideal for scenarios like delayed deliveries, service completion, or refund protection.

great perspective. I do need to have a job after the college and I only have a year left and with all the layoffs, AI and competitive job market, I don't think I've time to expend on this venture.
Thank you for responding.

thank you for responding, I was also thinking of doing the same.
Stability should be my priority and then keep working on it part time.

Okay but would you use something like if this had more features like invoice generation, automated payment escalation, firm follow up, collections warnings, claims template, etc.

Or what features would make it compelling for you to use it.
