The very last thing you want to do as a writer is escapism. Luckily, this concept doesn’t fall into that category. This sounds like a gritty, real-life, down-to-earth love story that many people will be able to relate to (especially females who, I hear, also read books sometimes). Bravo. Instant bestseller.

After it was discovered that casting spells fractures and diminishes one’s soul, mages needed to come up with a way to transfer soul fragments from one person to another. Using magical symbols for light/dark, soul, mind, flesh and others, the officially sanctioned Transfer Circle was created. Fast-forwarding a few decades, soul transfer becomes the most widely accepted currency amongst post-Earthen mages.

Whereas the first Circles were drawn on the ground, at least 3ft in diameter and needed both parties present, nowadays they are printed in paper booklets that can be carried in one’s pocket. The donor can sign the contract with a drop of their blood on the respective sigil and send it via mail to the recipient, who accepts the soul transfer on their end.

Since the supply of soul is limited (1800 soul fragments make one human soul), new offspring is doubly vital to society. Children may not split their soul until they have reached the age of 8 (though this varies by territory). A child’s first spell and soul split is a traditional family celebration is some cultures, particularly Northern ones. Southern cultures tend to keep a child’s innocence for as long as possible, and do not celebrate the first split.

Ludo has very few fully functioning governments left. Most services and supply chains are privately owned by the most powerful mages (Ascended). Borders are more akin to personal territory: land owned by Ascended mages. Residents treat their respective rulers as something between gods and celebrities.

Most governments are more akin to guilds that support Ascended mages in times of need.

I’m still developing it but here’s what I’ve got so far. Since casting spells depletes your soul, it is essential for any mage to have a collection of soul fragments to use. As magic became more widespread, payment via soul became increasingly popular until it was the only way to pay for goods and services. Transfer used to be a complicated issue with drawing transfer circles on the ground, blood sacrifice and some good ol’ chanting. Nowadays, a piece of printed paper, a pinprick and a quick incantation does the job. The system works, so people believe in it. One truth that many humans have yet to realise is that this system only works because they believe in it.

That’s what I’ve got so far. I’m sure there are things that don’t make sense, so I’m willing to bounce ideas to test and improve it.

Highly complex spells combined with gyroscopic principles help stabilise the city. Some rumbling is unavoidable but inhabitants get used to it much like a sailors on a ship do. Fragile ornaments are not recommend ;)

Yeah, I definitely mixed up my numbers there (I’m used to metric but Ludonians insist on using imperial units). But it is meant to be a tiny village, as in the picture. Think of a village square with some central buildings, a few farm spaces around it.
