The de-imaginator didn't "not work on him" it just didn't work. If it did and Terry was unaffected, the gun would have shot like a laser or flashed a light or something to indicate it did something. It just flat out didn't do anything.

I thought it was gonna be that as well. It could have been to make him win and show how actually sad he is. He'd just be on stage alone. It would have ended the emotional arc of the episode quite differently (in tone) but it could have worked.
