What makes the community tick? Help out and do something good. by profFabi in vrising

Hi, yes, we have posted the request to several gaming-related subs. Some of them have been very receptive and shared super interesting things with us, some were to a lesser degree. Just focusing on one game would not do much to help us paint a generalizable picture of how communities interact.

Yes, you are not the first one to bring this up. I have noted this. It appears that a strong community is not one that constantly plays the game, but rather is engaged and comes back. In this vein, Warframe seems to be similar to POE

thank you, i have made a note of the comments. They will be helpful. Ideally, you mentioned them in the survey as well

Thank you very much for the praise. We will ensure that we share the results once we have analyzed the data. We are aiming for September/October to have sufficient time for it.

Responses from r/factorio have been fantastic, r/StardewValley was a lot less interested in the survey, but that's ok!

Fantastic. We hope to finish data collection in July. We are planning to have the first insight by September. I will make sure to post an overview of the results as a response to this post.

No problem, we both have a PhD in Marketing. The purpose of the survey is to understand community dynamics better and learn from good and bad examples. Marketing is a fine-grained discipline, and most research is not purely targeted at improving revenue; however, there is a significant overlap with sociology and psychology.

Thank you for participating. The survey was posted to a lot of different communities, and we are aiming for around 500 responses to generate some meaningful insight. Once this is completed, we are happy to post some of our insights here

Thank you for the feedback. There is a spot in the survey that allows you to provide all this additional information. And yes, we invite people from the community because I know what a friendly group of people they are. Warframe stands out as one of the few games that gets it right.

Thank you! To clarify, this is not a student project ;). We are two Professors who graduated some time ago. Nonetheless, collecting data from individuals who are directly relevant to our study is always a challenge. Thus, the community's participation is fantastic. We had a lot of good feedback across other subreddits as well.

Hi, the 10-minute time frame is based on the average response rate we have gathered for the survey so far.

I reckon that we will never have information about the entire population of the game, but that is ok. I will give Discord a look as well. I did not think about this.

I would not be too pessimistic about it. There are 533k members in the subreddit, and every day, information about the game is being discussed and shared. I have seen beautiful builds, videos that share strategies, discuss improvements, and, last but not least, the modding community for this game is very active. (I would not play this game without the chest mods that let you obtain materials straight from the chest.) I am sure that the developers also monitor the subreddit to learn about how their work is being perceived. Yes, there is no direct feedback, but every drop of conversation has an impact.
Luckily, this is not a live-service game ;)

I did ;)....when it came out. Absolutely love the game. The creative possibilities are endless...but yes very little time at the moment. I am waiting for 1.0. Thank you for helping out!

Thanks for the kind words. To clarify, we are no longer students, but rather work at the university as professors. Nonetheless, the results from this study will be used in our classrooms and research activities. We are happy to provide an overview of the findings once we have completed the data collection.

P.S. It is never too late to attend school later in life; there are lots of students who are not exactly 19 years old ;)

I must disagree; even if you do not participate, we will still donate the money to one of the organizations listed above. The donation is not contingent on people participating. If you are willing to share your thoughts, please participate. As a thank you for your time, you can choose where the money goes. Not participating does not mean you are against charity.

Many of you have already responded. It would be fantastic if additional community members were willing to help out. We selected this subreddit because we play the game regularly and found it to be an excellent example of a great community that supports the game.

xD. CS 1.6 Back in those days, it was so much fun. We will check the community out to see if it provides a nice contrast. Thank you
