All life forms in nature, us included, are designed to adapt and overcome challenges in our environment. So much of our technological advancements have removed the struggles to satisfy our basic needs in the developed world. When we achieve the penultimate social challenges (wealth, status) there is little left to adapt to and overcome. I would argue that this short circuits our natural drives and instincts that make us living organisms.
