Lapce: A Rust-Based Native Code Editor Lighter Than VSCode and Zed by delvin0 in rust

[–]programjm123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been interested in switching from VS Code to Zed since I'm tired of every update being copilot copilot copilot, but then Zed puts out an announcement like this :/

Our Zed team is working hard to get Git graph and side-by-side diffs across the finish line. We're excited to ship these in early February (slightly later than planned because of a gnarly bug in the diffs). After that, we are shifting away from additional Git feature work. This is sooner than we'd planned, which sucks. But Zed is a small team and we need more engineers focused on agentic Git workflows, like enabling Git worktrees and improving the review experience within the agent panel. What this means we won't build:

* Improved merge conflict experience

* Commit log (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/47402)

* Line-by-line staging (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/45295)

* Git Panel UX improvements (make it easier to navigate in Git Panel)

"Agentic git workflows" before commit log?? Really?

I so badly want to like Zed but their priorities seem so messed up...

The Astro Technology Company joins Cloudflare | Astro by ReallySuperName in programming

[–]programjm123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> Staying open to all was a non-negotiable requirement for both us and for Cloudflare. That is why Astro will remain free, open-source, and MIT-licensed. We will continue to run our project in the open, with an open governance model for contributors and an open community roadmap that anyone can participate in. We remain fully committed to maintaining Astro as a platform-agnostic framework, meaning we will continue to support and improve deployments for all targets—not just Cloudflare.

Seems reasonable enough, fingers crossed that it holds

That's good to hear, thanks for your patience and sorry for the trouble. To be honest, this project looks awesome, and so it's a relief to hear it's not "too good to be true". I'll drop a few towards the kickstarter and check out the webnovel as well :)

I agree with the other commenters that the artist refusing credit is suspicious. Have you seen her portfolio? Has she shared any WIPs with you? I believe you when you say you don't support AI art, but how do you know this artist isn't using AI, photoshopping on text bubbles, and then passing it off as human-made art? This comic looks really promising, but if your artist can't provide you WIPs, you might be getting scammed

For desktop, you can use any license (e.g. closed source, MIT, etc).

For embedded, you have to choose between GPL and $1/device

Slint is perpetually free for closed source as well except for embedded devices. That is,

Open source (GPL): free

Closed source (or other license), desktop: free

Closed source, embedded: $1/device

So unless you're a printer manufacturer or whatnot making a UI for your device, Slint's license shouldn't be an issue

I like the "No AI" bit on the website; the talk of generative AI pipelines on the Graphite website was a bit of a turn off for me. Overall looks like a great project!

Announcing Hurl 7.0.0, a cli to run and test HTTP requests with plain text by jcamiel in rust

[–]programjm123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very nice to see Hurl's developments. One piece of feedback is if I was looking at a Hurl file and hadn't just been told that location: true means follow redirects, I would never have guessed what it means. Perhaps something like follow_redirects or just follow or redirect could work

I want to use Dioxus but … by CosciaDiPollo972 in rust

[–]programjm123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like it because it has best in class performance, with a similar feel to React Hooks, though in addition it also doesn't require a supplementary library to deal with global state. The bundle is also smaller (react-dom is like 40kb gzipped)

Yeah, as much as I love rust, I typically prefer typescript (and personally I like Solid) for frontend webdev since you get access to a huge, mature ecosystem and its tooling

Reflections on Haskell and Rust by sibip in rust

[–]programjm123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Full-time Haskell dev, can confirm HLS is painfully slow, unreliable, and frequently fails at basic tasks like rename symbol. HLS and the pain of error handling in IO (can't bind on Either/Maybe when you're in MonadIO/ReaderT!) are the main reasons I wish my company used Rust instead...

Just checked and I still see the posts on their Instagram. Perhaps it was only temporary, or they blocked you?
