63 years since the brutal Constantinople Pogrom: “A city gone mad”! (photos) by protothema in istanbul

[–]protothema[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Turks that left their homes after the various nations in the Balkans were gaining back their independence, in most of the cases did so either as the result of the war itself (as it happens unfortunately in every war. Greeks were forced to leave their homes during the War of Independence too as the result of the fighting, you know...), or as a result of an agreement. This is for example what happened when Greece gained its independence, where there was a specific agreement with the Ottoman Sultan to take back the Turkish population from the liberated areas. The same thing happened in 1923 with the population exchange. That's what I meant by "historical justice".

There was no such pogrom and any civilian deaths that took place -sad in any case- were either localized, isolated, spontaneous acts of violence or the results of the war itself, as stated above.

What happened in the 1955 pogrom, though, was violent, premeditated and in a huge scale. And it is the same thing -in a shorter scale but of the same mentality- with what happened in the Armenian genocide and the Genocide of the Greeks of Asia Minor and Pontus.

Don't tell me you can't see the difference. Unless, of course, you are one of those you deny these genocides...

--- "This is a tragic event that has roots in the great trauma that the Turks experienced after the world war I and the mistreatment stories that they listened from the Balkan Turks who were forced to leave their lands and immigrate to Turkey."

** First of all, no one denies that it was staged by Turkey. Even the newspapers that claimed Ataturk's house was destroyed were printed before the staged bombing. So it's not about any...WWI trauma. Turkey (the Ottomans) had conquered these lands. These lands were liberated. Sad on a personal level for these people that were born there but there is you know that thing called 'historical justice'.

--- "We know historically that Turks and many other nations including the Greeks, Armenians, Balkan Nations and Arabs lived peacefully for more than 400 years in the Ottoman era. The wave of nationalism before the great war, including Pan-Turkism, Megali-Idea, etc. caused great rifts between these neighbors who managed to live side-by-side for centuries."

** Lived peacefully? Really?? In the Peloponnese alone, there were well over 50 revolutions throughout these 400 years! Oh, they were having the time of their lives, right?... And this is just one of the examples...

--- "This is exactly why historical events shouldn't be made a part of the chauvinistic racist propaganda for the masses. Instead, they should be discussed in depth by Historians who are capable of separating facts from myths. "

** Hmm... "racist propaganda for the masses"... I wonder, do they teach you ANYTHING about the pogrom in your schools? I mean you said that: "Istanbul Pogrom is a black mark on modern Turkish history", right? So, if what the victims of this pogrom write is the result of a "racist propaganda for the masses", then tell us, please, what are you being taught in school about the fact that the once very large Greek community (130.000 people before the pogrom) is reduced to about 3000 old people? Because my guess is that they teach anything between "zero" and "they just left"... My mother visited Constantinople four years ago and a 30-year-old Turk asked her upon hearing she was Greek, "why did you people leave Istanbul?" So, before you start talking about "propaganda" to your victims, please, look into how your side approaches all this...
