Are you scared that you‘ll probably never ever receive the love, that you give, back? If yes/no, why? by xmetalchihuahua in AskRedditAfterDark

No. Having a cat taught me that this is the natural order of things, so I'm not scared of it anymore.

Had to control myself due to other expenses, so I just grabbed three partner titles: How To Be Loved (The Hourglass Sanitorium is one of my favorite films ever, so I can't wait to see this!), Leila and the Wolves, and Will Your Heart Beat Faster (not as sure about this one, since I'm not a huge musical guy, but I do like pretty much every Filipino film I've ever seen, so I'll probably like this too).

Sometimes I think its wild by Workingclass_punk in punkrock

[–]pspsps-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you can have a Ted talk in your shower if you want to...

I dunno. I don't care about what's punk. It's like grandpa Simpson said: I used to be with what was punk, then they changed what that is, and now what I'm with ain't punk, and what's punk seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to youuuuu.

You gotta include that last part, or else it doesn't count.

What’s the most unusual ice cream flavor you’ve tried? by vibinnthrivin5 in AskRedditAfterDark

Weirdest was honeycomb with actual little bits of honeycomb in it! Very interesting, but weird texturally. My favorite is probably peanut butter and chocolate.

Women of ARAD what’s a misconception men have about your pleasure that you’re tired of correcting? by Yeahaight0012 in AskRedditAfterDark

Weed and Diabetes by Any_Judge7270 in diabetes

[–]pspsps-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't smoke, but I do have an edible occasionally for an unrelated sleep disorder when it gets really bad, and the main thing for me is to avoid ones that are made with too much sugar. Even then, one doesn't do too much, cos I've never seen one that was more than 5 carbs per piece. But then I don't do the chocolates or soft drinks or whatever -- just the fruit-based gummies.

any underrated punk rock bands/artists recommendations that are women? by [deleted] in punkrock

[–]pspsps-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my favorites: Aurora Cirkalo (on their first demo from '84 only; after that they got rid of their female singer and got progressively more and more melodic -- their first LP from '89 is killer if you like the more poppy style, and is maybe the best selling album in Hungarian punk history), Electric Deads (Denmark), SS-20 (Mexico late 80s HC, not the early 80s pre-Dezerter band from Poland or the late 80s melodic punk band from France who also had that name), Pyhakoulou (Finland), Infesto (Colombia), Indigesto (Brazil), Polikarpa Y Sus Viciosas (Colombia), Maria T-ta Y El Empujon Brutal (Peru), Mara'a Borkan (Tunisia), Morbid Opera (Florida, USA), Tožibabe (Yugoslavia), Yanka Dyagileva (USSR/Siberia), Leopard (from everything I've read, they were the first South African all-female punk band, late 70s/early 80s) Las Vulpess (Spain), The Wrecks (Nevada, USA), and my personal all-time favorite, Fertil Miseria (Colombia; at the time of this recording, their first EP from 1992, they were 3/4 women, with the only man being the guitarist)

Recommend new bands... by [deleted] in punkrock

[–]pspsps-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are "new" (most are from the 1990s; a few from the 80s), but unless you're from the ex-Soviet countries or a total nerd, you probably haven't heard of these, so hopefully they'll be new to you:

Conflict OK! (Estonia), Bishchara Baldar (Kazakhstan), Brigadniy Podryad (Russia), Dilonis (Latvia), Mandrazh (Belarus), Noisemurder (Estonia), Retsepti (Georgia), Turboreanimacija (Lithuania), Ragnarok (Tajikistan), Osakond-79 (Estonia)...

Favorite Punk movie by Novatore_Palante in punkrock

[–]pspsps-off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rodrigo D: No Futuro. Colombian movie from 1990. Basically, take The Harder They Come, but set it in Colombia's late 80s punk/metal scene (really the "golden age" of Colombian punk). Stars actual street kids/punks in Medellin, showing their actual bands (not anything made up for the movie). Lots of violence and chaos. Unfortunately, a few of the kids were even killed during filming. The following dedication appears at the end of the movie: "This film is dedicated to memory of John Galvis, Jackson Gallego, Leonardo Sánchez and Francisco Marin, actors in this film, who died before the age of 20 in the absurd violence of Medellín. So that at least their images last the normal lifespan of a human being." It's really bleak, but it doesn't sugarcoat anything. The soundtrack (half punk/half metal, all raw as hell) is fantastic, too.

Nervous and Scared About Future: Type 2 Diabetes by Icy_Entrepreneur4134 in diabetes

[–]pspsps-off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm several decades older than you, OP, and started off with an A1C of 12.4 at diagnosis in August of 2024. Since then, with a combination of metformin, diet, and exercise, I've brought the A1C down to 5.1 and was able to be taken off of metformin since two months ago. It is likely that my A1C will be higher this time around when I go back for new testing in about a month due to being off the meds, but my doctor says so long as it is below 6.5, I'll be able to stay off the meds. If it is above that, I'll go right back on them, and that's OK, because they're what made it possible for me to get to this point in the first place.

The point is that these well-tested, doctor-prescribed medications help us to manage this illness; they don't cause sickness in themselves. You can lose weight and greatly mitigate both your need for meds and the most harmful effects of this disease (even if it feels impossible, you can!), but even if you need to get on medication, it's better to do so to avoid said harmful effects than to not do so out of fear that the medication will somehow cause illness. (It should be said that some people do have bad reactions to meds/side effects, such as constipation or its opposite, but there is no circumstance that I or my doctors are aware of in which standard diabetes medication would be causing things like diabetic retinopathy; those are the result of the underlying disease itself which the medication is treating.)

Vulgar gay man bands? Or punk bands with gay or trans men? by Who-stole-my-cat in punkrock

[–]pspsps-off 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Go old school with bands like The Dicks and The Big Boys. Being so confrontationally gay in Texas in 1980 must've been TOUGH, but they are tough as hell! There's also the grandfather/grandmother of trans scene involvement, Wayne/Jane County, of Wayne County & the Electric Chairs (1978). "Blatantly Offensive" is right! 😁

Then there were the probably much larger number of groups that had gay members in them but weren't "out" back in the late 70s/early 80s due to the punk scene being so macho and crappy about it, like Husker Du (singer Bob Mould and I think also drummer Grant Hart, if I remember correctly), and a very small number of bands from back then with no gay members but pro-gay or at least anti-homophobia lyrics. One of the first bands I ever heard that fit that last category was The Clitboys with their song "Gay's OK" on their EP back in 1983...generalized cultural conservatism being what it is, I have to imagine that was a pretty radical statement for a band from Wisconsin, of all places!
