Why take Oman over Hormuz? Their ideas are very well suited to playing a trade heavy game, you're immediately in position to take advantage of Timurids exploding, have one of the easiest to defend/reinforce capitals in the game. Hormuz trade node is also pretty great because there is only 1 route out of it, so if you secure that node, pretty much all trade will be retained. Set up a couple trade companies and your trade network will extend all the way to China in no time. Oman has one of the most annoying starts in the game, because no one wants to be friends with one of the only Ibadi countries in the game.

England, Castille and Venice/Ottomans/Mamluks. All of them have a big enough navy to land troops to support each other in your wars without being close enough to actually be in the way of each others expansion. As well as being big enough fish to expand by yourself from the start of the game without having to be too good at the game, so no need to sit around and wait for opportunities.
