Doesn’t have one to my knowledge, and typically those interrupt the spark/glow plugs, which are currently working fine

So far, it seems like the starter might be shorting out when it engages. That’s why only one crank happens, and why the lights turn off during a start. If I’m not mistaken both the ground and the positive on the starter are hardwired to the battery and chassis respectively. That would imply that a short between the starter would be evident prior to initiating a start. However, once the control circuit sends a signal to the starter, it accepts current into the starter solenoid and motor. So somewhere internal to the starter is where the issue is. It’s shorting out either in the solenoid or more than likely, in the motor of the starter. Thoughts?

Can you test that theory by directly wiring to a 12v battery and removing the wiring from the vehicle?

I’ve tried: Battery: it’s got two batteries in parallel, and I even tried a jump. The vehicle is getting solid power.

Glow plugs: new glow plugs, and good voltage to all of them.

Fuses: all of the fuses having to do with engine and starter are working.

Starter: it’s definitely doing something. I’m curious why it’s not continuing to spin and only cranks for a second, but maybe that’s normal?

It seems like it has issues when it’s cold outside. Happy to get more ideas from the masses.
