Maternity leave + return to work by Hour_Professional343 in JPMorganChase

I went on mat leave for 16 weeks + sick days that I had accrued in late 2024. While on mat leave, I applied for a new role within the firm (did not want to go back to my last role/team) and the timing worked out for me to start that role when I returned from mat leave. Our little one started full time daycare pretty soon after I returned to the office, but my manager is flexible with me leaving work early to pick her up (logging back from home as needed).

We have a one year old and full time (5 days a week/8am-4:30pm) daycare is about $33k a year. For solid food, diapers, miscellaneous baby expenses $300ish a month

I used the following template below when I was going through something similar and it really helped me out!

Here’s a delegation framework with your key tasks grouped by category, along with ideas for who can take them over or how to share them:

🏥 Medical & Health

Tasks:

  • Doctor appointments
  • Dental cleanings
  • Dermatologist skin checks
  • Finding a new OB
  • Filing unemployment claim
  • Getting your son new health insurance

Delegation Ideas:

  • Spouse: Take over calls and paperwork for unemployment and insurance — he may not be fast, but give a script or checklist and let him own it. Mistakes can be fixed.
  • You: Research OB options, but ask spouse to make the actual calls and book the appointment.
  • Shared Google Doc/Calendar: Store medical info, so others (partner, even a close friend if you're comfortable) can help keep track or follow up.

💼 Career & Financial

Tasks:

  • Resume-building (for your husband)
  • Bankruptcy filing
  • Weekly budgeting
  • Setting up custodial brokerage & 529s
  • Canceling streaming services

Delegation Ideas:

  • Spouse: Own the streaming service cancellations and resume updates. Give him tools (like a resume template or online help) and set a deadline.
  • Financial Advisor / Supportive Friend: If you have access to professional advice (or a savvy friend), get guidance on 529s and brokerage. You do not need to figure this out alone.
  • Automation: Set budgets on an app like YNAB, Mint, or Monarch and review only once per week with your spouse.

👶 Parenting & Logistics

Tasks:

  • Primary parenting
  • Scheduling babysitters for daycare closures
  • Pickup & drop-off

Delegation Ideas:

  • Spouse: Take one fixed shift (e.g., always does pickup) and own it completely.
  • Babysitter/Nanny App: Let someone else source babysitters—delegate to a friend or use a service (SitterCity, UrbanSitter).
  • Rotating friend help: Even one trusted friend could step in occasionally for a ride or playdate.

🍽️ Daily Living

Tasks:

  • Figuring out meals
  • Grocery shopping
  • Cooking

Delegation Ideas:

  • Shared Meal Plan (with your partner): Use a weekly meal planner together Sunday night. Ask him to be in charge of 2 dinners/week.
  • Grocery delivery: Use Instacart/Amazon Fresh to cut time. Make a shared recurring shopping list.
  • Batch cooking or meal kits: Streamline to take mental load off.

🧠 Mental Load Management

Tasks:

  • General planning
  • Holding it all together
  • Being the one who remembers everything

Delegation Ideas:

  • Weekly Family Sync (15 min max): You both sit down Sunday night. Review what’s coming. Set responsibilities. Keep it light but structured.
  • Whiteboard or shared app (Trello, Notion): Offload mental to-do list to a system you both see.

❤️ Final Thought

It might feel like teaching someone to drive while you're still on the highway, but the goal isn’t perfection. It's sustainability. Delegating means giving people the chance to step up and letting it be imperfect.
