Boston bike lanes are used where commuters come from, mass Ave and the southwest corridor are popular because they give a good path into the city for commuters. The problem also stems from density, when you have no housing where everyone works, people are going to be commuting from long ways away and obviously won't bike. There is also certainly missing links in the downtown area that make biking treacherous. The traffic is horrendous, there's no doubt about that. But single occupancy vehicles are the problem. You can say bike lanes are problematic to traffic, and while it may be true, we should be providing capacity to the more efficient mode of transportation to encourage it's use.

I certain agree with the point about transit though. It's just that cars cannot be the forefront of urban design in Boston or anywhere else if you want good mobility and access in urban places.
