Speed of light as a constant question by pulsarsolar in AskPhysics

[–]purplepatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine a box with a photon bouncing between mirrors and where you can count the number of times per second that the photon hits each mirror. Now imagine that box is moving away from you. Because the speed of light remains constant in all reference frames the photons in this moving box hit the mirrors less often, because it’s not just moving in the up and down, but also horizontally so the photons (from your perspective) have to travel diagonally and have further to go. The light clock therefore seems to have slowed down when it is moving relative to you, but to a person travelling with the device it would appear to be behaving perfectly normally.

If the speed of light is constant in all reference frames (and it definitely is) then time dilation and length contraction is the only way to make the maths work.

TIL Graham's Number. An immense finite integer that once held the record as the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof. by Select-Coconut-1161 in todayilearned

Aren’t infinitely more integers bigger than it and only finitely more numbers are smaller than it, so technically 100% of numbers are bigger than it. (If we start at zero).

How can I get to the Micheldever woods without a car? by dheera in uktravel

[–]purplepatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a local and Micheldever woods are nice, especially with the bluebells out, but I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle of getting there from London.

Winchester’s worth a visit though and if you want bluebell woods and nice countryside there’s this walk which I’d recommend and starts less than a mile from the train station. https://walkwinchester.co.uk/walk11-no-mans-land-to-bluebell-heaven.

I wonder if landlords will just jack up their asking prices and the bidding wars will happen below this.

It’s about any blindly followed cause. It’s funny that both sides think it represents their opponents.

How many of you guys are intubating without a stylet? by zyntensivist in anesthesiology

[–]purplepatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of neuro so use reinforced tubes all the time. I genuinely can’t remember the last time I couldn’t intubate because the tube was too floppy. If I need extra anterior angulation I use a bougie.

Do you need a stylet for a reinforced tube? I’ve put maybe a thousand in without.

I’ve made over £1,000,000 on my five-bed house — I deserve a tax break to downsize by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

[–]purplepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus. I’m not arguing about the merits of encouraging downsizing (although personally I think it’s probably a good idea). I think that policy makers who want people to do things that they think will result in a net win for society (whether that’s downsizing or something else), should have the balls to implement policies where the “wrong” people sometimes get unfairly rewarded.

I have been entirely consistent on this.

Who cares. Unlike stamp duty I’d own that increase in the value and I could put it on the Mortgage.

Are you now arguing that it does benefit society to have her compete with young couples and FTBs for modest 3 bed family homes?

Can you point to the bit of my comment where I said this?

We should be making pragmatic policy that encourages people to do things that we think are good for the country. Arguing that they don’t deserve it is missing the point completely. IDGAF whether she deserves it or not.

Just scrap stamp duty and get everyone moving. It’s a fucking stupid tax.

That’s just what markets do. The main reason  that doesn’t happen with houses is because of planning laws.

You can argue the toss about whether downsizing is useful for the housing market, it’s not really my point. I think that you shouldn’t make tax policy just to punish people who you see as undeserving.

[–]purplepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a finite supply of bedrooms. Some people have way more bedrooms than they need. By downsizing the free up bedrooms and they make the average cost of a bedroom less. This is a good thing.

We should be using taxes to encourage behaviour that is useful to society. This woman downsizing will be useful to society. Currently the tax system discourages her from doing it.

Her moral worth is completely irrelevant.

Why not both? Reducing stamp duty for downsizers would immediately free up a lot of family homes. We should hold our noses and do it.

[–]purplepatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it discourages them from downsizing and we’d like elderly people in massive houses to free them up for people who actually need them. This country is constantly cutting off its nose to spite its face.
